Reflective Journal #6: Persuasive Speaking.

In this week's post, we are reviewing the Lucas Tutorials from Week 9-10 posted by your classmates. As we prepare for our individual persuasive speeches, it is important that we keep coming back to Lucas to help us understand what makes good persuasive speaking.

Speaking to persuade is one of the most challenging forms of public speaking and presentation. For this, you are addressing a skeptical audience, which adds another layer of pressure to this unique situation.

Remember that the unique challenge of persuasive speaking is that we must influence or change the minds of our audience. This means we must know who they are, what they believe, and what kind of argument and evidence will serve to challenge their points of view.

For this blog post, I want you to view 2 of your classmates' tutorial videos. From each, reflect on one key learning you gain that will benefit the preparation of your persuasive speech. Please take these tutorials to heart, as they truly matter to your work.

Please make your first post by Sunday night, and then respond to 2 other posts by next class.

As always, please remember to include your ID# in your posts. Aj. M

The first tutorial video I watched was emotional appeal. I always believed that emotions are very important in any kind of speech. Emotions can help us to deliver our thought to the audience easily. And it can be more persuasive than facts. I learned many effective ways about how to use my emotions in the persuasive speech from the video. But, the most important point that I learn was to connect my emotions with logic and facts. I think that if I use this advice and I was able to connect my emotions about my persuasive speech topic and a real facts my speech. I will be able to reach my audience hearts and convince them by my ideas.

the second video I watch was demographic audience analysis. I think this is a very good point to know before my persuasive speech, especially that we have students in this class are coming from different backgrounds. the first learning was the steps of demographic analysis such as identifying the general demographic features. Age and religion are one of the aspect were we need to analysis our audience in before the persuasive speech. I will definitely consider the Age of my classmates and try to select a topic which they might be interested in. As I said many of us came from different backgrounds so we have many different religions in this class. And it is important that my topic Won't crossover any of these religions.

I totally agree that emotional appeals are very important in delivering a speech, especially for a persuasive speech. I also think that in order to successfully persuade the audience, we need to consider their possible perspectives towards the speech topic, and we can do this by identifying their demographic features and backgrounds.

I completely agree with you that we should be aware of choosing the topic that will not cause conflict with the audience, particularly when speaking about gender and religions. Therefore, I think it is crucial to analyze the audience demographic to give the appropriate speech and to effectively persuade the audience.

The tutorial video on Psychology of Persuasion made me realize that delivering a persuasive speech to audiences is like having a conversation with my friends. In other words, my friends could be agreeing on some parts of my opinions and disagreeing on the other parts, except that in this case they do not verbally response. One key learning from the video is to anticipate possible objections and questions in the audience’s mind, by putting myself in their shoes, and make sure to answer those counter-points and concerns in the speech.

From the tutorial video on Reasoning, I learnt that the audience needs to first understand your reasoning before they can agree with your standpoint. For the principle of reasoning, it often begins with general claims and ends with specific conclusion. When preparing points to be discussed in my persuasive speech, I would need to be careful that my reasoning is clear and not based on logical fallacies as they can later raise logical questions and weaken my credibility as a speaker.

Definitely it is important to learn what are the questions may come to your audience mind and try to answer it before they ask. This will make us more prepared and ready to give a speech. It might be useful to speak with our friends about the speech topic to know what might my audience think.
I agree that we should make sure that our points are clear to the audience. And they are understanding what we are trying to explain, so they won't have many questions.

I think it is true that the audiences have to understand our reasons first before they can agree to believe on our point of view. It is also important to make sure that our reason is clear, not biased, or based on logical fallacies. This is because when our argument is biased or not clear, this can easily lower the speaker credibility.

The first tutorial video I watched is “Question of Facts”. In this video, I learnt that question of facts is a question about the truth or falsity of an assertion. However, for some questions, we do not have enough information to know whether there is a true answer (such as predictions or open-ended questions). For persuasive speech, a question of fact is partisan. The speaker acts as an advocate to present one view of the facts as persuasively as possible.

The second tutorial video I watched is “Question of Policy”. Question of policy is a question about whether a specific course of action should or should not be taken. There are two main types of speech on questions of policy: speeches to gain passive agreement (persuasive speech to convince the audience that given policy is desirable without encouraging the audience to take action) and speech to gain immediate action (persuasive speech to convince the audience to take action in support of a given policy).

The role of a speaker in a persuasive speech is to attempt to convince the audience by proposing an answer to a question (even if it may not be 100% true). So I agree that the speaker is just acting as "an advocate to present one view of the facts".

The tutorial by Pin on Demographic Audience Analysis taught me how important it is to know your audience. By analysing your audience, you can avoid stereotyping--which could cause a lot of trouble. Knowing your audience will help you group them by category such as age, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and etc., and will help you to choose your topic and be more careful of your words.

From the tutorial Building Credibility by Palakorn, credibility plays an important role in making a good speech. Credibility mainly have 2 important factors: competence and character. The 2 factors makes it easier for the audience to accept what the speaker is saying or claiming. I also learned that it is important to establish a common ground with the audience to connect more with the audience.

The first video was on building credibility. There are 2 factors that make the audience accept what the speakers say. First, is the character and the second is competence which refers to the speaker’s expertise. The video made me realize that the credibility of the speaker is judged even before the speech, and the ending of the speech can affect the initial credibility of the next speech. So, it is important to build strong credibility. While speaking, you can enhance your credibility by stating your competence, creating common ground for the audience, and truly believe in what you are talking about.

The second video was on appealing to emotions. To persuade audience, the speaker need to make the audience feel with the speech. One key thing that I gained is that emotional appeals should not be used for evidence. It is really important to use emotional appeal ethically, speakers should use only sound logic and information to persuade audiences.

    Question of value
Question of value is the worth, rightness, morality of an idea or action. Oftentime it might be confused with the question of fact that asks for the scientific outcome. So, the possible answer to the question must depend on factual knowledge and our moral values. When applying questions of value to the persuasive speeches, I need to organize my speech topically. Starting with the first main point which I would establish the standard for my value judgement. For the second main point, I would apply those standards to the subject of my speech.

    Appealing to emotions
Emotion appeals are the intentions to make listeners feel sad, angry, guilty, afraid, happy or even sympathetic. To generate emotional appeal, I need to use emotional language which I would utilize emotion-laden words; to produce a desired effect. Followed by developing vivid examples; adding illustrative descriptions towards the story I am trying to say, for example, saying the cause and effects on one person. And speak with sincerity and conviction; every single words I say must be truthful in order to let the audience feel it too.

The first video is about appealing to emotions. One key learning point that benefits the preparation for my persuasive speech is adding emotions to the argument can make a more compelling persuasive speaker. This is because the intention of using emotional appeals is to stirrup emotions, which can lead to the reaction by making the listener feel afraid, compassionate, sad, angry, etc. There are three ways to generate emotional appeals, for instance using emotional language, developing vivid examples, and speaking with sincerity and conviction. Additionally, it is imperative to use emotional appeal ethically and make sure that it is suitable for the chosen topic.

The second video is using evidence, with the key learning that using strong and supporting evidence can enhance the speaker's credibility and increase persuasiveness. The evidence can be statistics, testimony, and example. There are three tips for using evidence to make a more persuasive speech. Firstly, using specific evidence such as supporting number statistics rather than using a general term. Secondly, using novel evidence by citing new evidence and finding in-depth research. Thirdly, using evidence from credible sources to support the points is better than using less qualified sources. Lastly, it is important to keep in mind that the evidence is used just to prove a point, but the speaker is the one who should make a conclusion for the audience.

The first Lucas tutorial video I watched was the question of policy. When we are doing a persuasive speech about the question of policy, we should consider three basic issues. These three are first the needs. This step we have to convince our listeners for change in current policy. The second issue is the Plan. In this part, we should point out the problem with the old policy and provide a solution to help solve the problem. The last issue is the Practicality. This is when we have to show audiences that our proposed solution is successful in solving the problem. When I am planning to do a question of policy, I will have to consider these three issue to make sure that my speech will be a persuasive one.

The second video tutorial I watched was about using evidences. Evidences are very crucial in your persuasive speech and when you are using evidence can help you better persuade your audiences. In our persuasive speech we should consider to use specific evidences enhancing the speaker’s credibility because it makes the audience know that the speaker has an understanding of the facts. We should also use novel evidences in our persuasive speech which is using evidence that is new to the listeners which may require the speaker to do more research. It is an effective way of using evidence since the speaker will be present a new information making it persuasive. We should also use evidence from sources that are credible or well known rather than evidence from non-credible sources. The important thing about using evidences is that we as a speaker should make sure that we clearly state about the point we are trying to prove using that piece of evidence in our speech.

Appeal to emotions: This first video that I watched really helped me reflect on myself. In anything you do, people will feel for you if you learn to add emotions to it. Same thing goes with the speech. Have you ever listened to someone perform their speech without emotions or life? It's very boring. So the benefits of using emotions to a persuasive speech is that people will feel what you're going through whether whatever those set of emotions will be. There are many ways you can have emotional appeals such as emotional language, developing examples that are vivid and speaking with conviction and sicerity keeping in mind that the emotions that you choose to deal with correlate with the topic you are presenting about too. Practice is key and also inflicting real life emotions to your speech will make it way more believable.

Question of value: The definition of question of value is rightness, and morality of an idea or action. Question of values need to have the right balance between factual knowledge or scientific knowledge and morality. To compare this to a real life persuasive speech. We need to present the audience with factual knowledge and from that factual knowledge, we can analyze and crtizize to put those into our own opinions and explain it to our audience.

Moreover, there are also many factors that are needed in analyzing the question of policy. For instance, the speaker needs a plan to solve a problem with current policy and also shows the audience that your plan will work by demonstrating a successful plan that is similar to your solution. From the question of value video, some questions require not only factual judgments, but also value judgments based on a person's views on what is right and wrong, good and evil, moral and immoral, correct or inappropriate, fair and unfair. Question of value is not only personal taste or opinion. As a result, if you're giving a speech about a topic of importance, make sure to explain and consider the criteria for value judgment. The majority of the time, a persuasive speech on a value issue is structured topically. The most common approach is to define a value judgment standard, and then apply those criteria to the topic of your speech.

From the tutorial question of policy, when giving a persuasive speech on a policy topic, there are three basic issues to remember. We must persuade listeners to change current policy in this step. The Plan is the second thing. In this section, we can define the flaws in the previous policy and propose a solution to help solve the problem. The last point to consider is practicality. This is the point at which we must demonstrate to the audience that our suggested solution is effective in solving the problem.

The first video I watched mentions three key aspects of appealing to emotions. Using emotional language can help generate strong emotional power resulting in a reaction from the audience that we want. This means that we can evoke feelings of fear, anger, guilt, etc. given if the words we use are emotion-laden and effectively used. The video then explains how the use of vivid examples can make a huge difference in the emotional appeal by comparing two examples (one of the examples describes a case of a person who has been infected with COVID-19, while the other does not). We can conclude that the use of vivid examples can help convey messages in a way that makes the audience able to feel what it is like to be in the situation. Lastly, it is crucial for the speaker to understand that emotional appeal should not be used as a substitute for evidence and that it should be appropriate for the topic of the speech.

Building credibility is also very important in a persuasive speech. The video I watched explains that credibility is an attitude, meaning that it is dependent on the audience. As much as our credibility varies for each topic, it also varies for each audience. Before we speak we usually have a set level of credibility, but that changes depending on the things we say. Like a domino effect, it also affects your credibility for the next speech. Luckily, there are ways to enhance your credibility if you ever mess up your speeches (like I did). The first way is to explain your competence. This is when you show that you have done thorough research on your topic or that you have prior knowledge or experience on it. Another way is to establish common ground with the audience. This is done by identifying ideas that the audience agrees with and trying to express how your point aligns with their beliefs. Lastly, speaking with genuine conviction can help boost your credibility. A lot of research, a faster pace, and vocal variety represent this.

The first video I watched was emotional appeal. It can also be called pathos, and it is intended to make listeners feel sad, angry, guilty, afraid, happy, proud, and etc. For example, to invoke fear in the audience, the speaker can talk about serious illness, natural disaster, sexual assault, personal rejection, or economic hardship. Audiences can understand the emotions conveyed in a speech easier than other appeals, if used correctly, it can be a very powerful tool to persuade audiences. To make it more effective, we need to make use of vivid examples, this pulls the listeners into the speech. However, it must be used appropriately, it must be used in question of policy, but inappropriate to be used in a question of fact, which is about information and fact.
The next video I watched was on reasoning. Reasoning is the process of drawing a conclusion on the basis of evidence. Reasoning is important because no matter how strong the evidence is, if the reasoning is weak, then the listeners will not be persuaded. Reasoning is the process of drawing conclusions from a given evidence. To reason properly, we need to check if it is sound and make sure that the audience understands and agrees with it. Reasoning generally has evidence, and we need to analyze and explain it with a conclusion. This will be useful for my persuasive and academic speech because we need to analyze evidence and make sure it is sound and the audience is interested in it.

The first video is building credibility. There are two factors that affect your credibility. The first one is competence which means how the audiences consider the speaker’s knowledge. The second factor is character which is how the audience regards a speaker's trustworthiness. Also, I learned that to enhance credibility, we should explain the competence, create common ground for the audience, and try to speak fluently.

The second video is emotional appeal. Emotional appeals are the intention to make the audience experience different sensations. I learned that to generate emotional appeal, the speaker needs to use emotional language, develop vivid examples by adding illustrative descriptions in the story, and speak with sincerity and conviction. Also, it is important to use emotional appeal ethically.

The first video clip was about Question policy by Jellybean. There are two main types of the question of policy, first is the speech to gain passive agreement, and the second one is to gain immediate action. She mentioned about how to analyze the question of policy which there are three basic steps, need, plan, and practicality. In my opinion, it will be useful in the persuasive speech by making the speech more effective and grab the audience’s attention and want to follow.

The second video clip was about the Question of value by Jiang. He explained that some questions not only involve matters of fact, but they also demand value judgments. Most of the time, persuasive speech on a question of value is organized topically, which means that it is organized and separated a point by another point. The most common approach is to establish the standard for value judgment and the second main point would be to apply the standards to the subject of your speech.

The first tutorial video I watched was about question of fact. What I have learned from this video is that there are many questions of fact that cannot be answered absolutely. Although there are true answers, we are unable to reach a conclusion due to a lack of information. The question that belongs to prediction is one of the examples. Furthermore, according to this tutorial video, when giving a persuasive speech, you have to persuade the audience of your point of view by explaining one side of the facts as persuasively as possible, then you must draw a conclusion.

From the “Demographic Audience Analysis” video, I have learned several points that can be applied to my persuasive speech. The first is that we should be able to identify general features. This means that, in terms of age, each generation has different perspectives, so it is obvious that their views may differ from those of the previous generations. The following point is belief; we should avoid false beliefs. When delivering a persuasive speech, bear in mind that some listeners may have racial or cultural viewpoints that will affect their attitudes towards your speech, and your goal is to find how the audience will respond to each characteristic of your speech

For persuasive speech, credibility is important in order to provoke other to believe into what the speaker say. I listened to building credibility video. There are 2 factors of credibility. First is competence which refers to how the audience regards to speakers knowledge of that particular subject. Second is character which is how audience regards to speaker’s sincerity and welling of the audiences. It is important for audiences to observe speakers’ competence and characteristic which help speaker to convince the audiences to the content of their speech. Moreover, along the video, I got tips such as the way to show respect to the audiences to increase the credibility by identifying the speaker’s ideas to the audiences by showing speakers’ points of view is consistent with what audiences’ believe. Another video that I watched was Question of fact. It is a true or false of an assertion. However, according to the video, it is a fact that there some questions that cannot be answered exactly. Along the video, I learned how aims of the persuasive speech different from informative speech. This aids me to identify and organize the persuasive into the right way. According to the Question of fact video, it basically is to consider that the fact of those topic which we speak to the audience is persuasive enough to gain audience’s attention and convince or not. Since sometimes questions don’t have an absolute answer, we have to be persuasive as we present only one view of the fact. The organization of your speech is very important in order to deliver your points to persuade audience’s as much as possible.

Another one is the video of Building credibility. There’re 2 mains factors of credibility which are competence (how audiences regards a speaker intelligence) and character (how audiences regards a speaker’s trustworthiness). The more favorably audiences view of a speaker, the more they accept the fact we speak. So, a speaker have to enhance the credibility of your own so that the speech becomes more interesting and trustworthy.

The first video that I have watched is about 'Using evidence' in a persuasive speech. 'Using Evidence' maybe one of the most important part where the speaker can gain his credibility in a persuasive speech. In the mean time the speaker can show that, he is not just showing his personal opinions rather how the intellectual world is thinking about that specific topic. Therefore, the evidences have to be specific and from credible resources. It is also important to deliver the newest/updated evidences where the speaker is making his point clear to his audience.

The second video that I have watched is about 'reasoning'. simply in this reasoning, we want to find the conclusions from available evidences. This topic is really interesting. In a persuasive speech reasoning has two major concerns. firstly, it has to be sound and secondly, it has to be convincing to the listener what makes sense in real world. There are four basic methods of reasoning. They are specific reasoning, reasoning from principles, Casual reasoning, and analogical reasoning respectively. Every types is important in a persuasive speech. We need to be careful of an error in reasoning or fallacies while delivering a persuasive speech. There are many kinds of fallacies like false cause where the actual reason is false, hasty generalizations where drawing conclusions from only one cause that might not be appropriate, and red herring where the the conclusion is from irrelevant causes.

By keeping these steps in mind, you are able to do an effective persuasive speech.

"Question of Fact" was the second video that I watched. The question of fact or the question about truth and falsity of an assertion sometimes can be answered immediately and sometimes it cannot. This is because sometimes we do know some facts about the question and sometimes we do not. The question of fact can be applied to the informative speech and persuasive speech. For example, in informative speech, the question of fact aims to inform the audience not to argue with any other concept. On the one hand, in persuasive speech, the question of fact aims to present one view of the facts as persuasively as possible.

From “Question of Fact” tutorial video, I learnt that the question of fact is a question about the truth or falsity of an assertion. Although the question is about the facts that have absolute answer, but some still cannot be answered, as we have not enough evidence to support the answer. For example, answers that rely on prediction such as economic growth. For persuasive speech, speaker acts as partisan, advocate, and present one view of the facts as persuasive as possible. Persuasive speech usually organized topically, divided into specific purpose, central idea, and main points.
From “Psychology of Persuasion”, in persuasive speech, we have to consider three majors aspects (listeners’ attitude, belief, and value). Also, there are 3 types of persuasive speech, agree, neutral, and disagree. In addition, process of persuasion involves the degree of persuasion from strongly opposed to strongly in favor. Lastly, how to overcome the challenges of persuasive speech, first is focusing on mental dialogue with listener and second is focusing on the target audience.

    Appealing to emotions
By adding emotions to our speeches, we appear to be more compelling. The three ways for generating emotional appeal includes using emotional language, developing vivid examples, and speaking with sincerity and conviction. The stronger a word is emotionally, the more desired effect it will produce. However, emotions rest in the audience, not merely on your words. We should keep in mind to not overuse emotionally-charged words, which might in turn cause a negative impact in our speech. By adding descriptive words into our speech, it would help audiences portray an image in their mind, enhancing the emotional appeal. When we use emotional appeal, make sure it’s ethically sound: be truthful in what you say, don’t replace evidence with emotional appeal, use reasoning to kindle emotions of audiences.

    Questions of value
To answer questions regarding “value”, we incorporate our factual knowledge along with our moral values (its worth, rightness, and morality of an idea or action). Whenever we are giving a speech on a question of value, we should also provide special thoughts to the standards for our value judgment. By using this learning in my persuasive speech, the first main point in answering questions of value is to establish the standards of my value judgment. The second main point is to apply those standards to the subject of my speech.

It is a question about the truth or falsity of an assertion which some are unable to answer and some are inconclusive. For persuasive speech, it is partisan. Speakers act as an advocate and to present one view of the facts as persuasive as possible.

The first video I have watched is the question of value by Jiang. In the video, he listed out the way we would normally bring the topic as the first part, then introduce the standard of value in relation to the upcoming context. It will be easier to draw the value and apply it to the context we are aiming for, instead of introduce our main goal first. This is about the question of worth and morality so it is better to keep thing more identifiable standard for the standard of value. It should have a specific purpose and central idea. We should also be aware of the fact that this is a standard, it is not a personal value or preference.

The second video I have watched is the idea of credibility by Stella. In the video, she explained 2 factors for credibility which are competences and characters. Competences are about the speaker’s ability, while characters are about the speaker’s sincerity to the audiences. Next, she also talk about 3 types of credibility: initial, derived, and terminal credibility. The initial is our first impression to the speaker. The credibility that is gained during our speech and how we deliver it is derived credits. Lastly, it is about how we end the whole things and what remain is our terminal credibility as a speaker. There’s also another important phrase that I personally uses in my daily life that is mentioned here as well. Generally, I would use it every times I have to speak for something. It is that you have to truly believe in it first, before you convince someone else. It’s quite surprising and relatable so it did left some impact when I’ve finished watching the video.

In the first video, I watched about appealing to emotions. So, first, she always gives the example to the topic and also adds more information to the topic to make it more clear. She also divides the topic explicitly, so the audience can follow what she was trying to say. There is also a 'keep in mind' for the audience. This will make the audience remember this part more from not putting anything to make it highlight. So, speaking emotional speech can make the speaker make a better persuasive speech. By using strong emotional powerful words can also enhance the speech. However, the speaker has to make sure that it is appropriate to the speech. In my speech, this technique can improve the speech by making the audience moving mind into my speech, so this will make my speech easier to persuade on any topic.

In the second video, I watched Psychology of Persuasion. She always gives a topic that has the information below. This can make the audience understand better of the speech if the speech is not clear. This is one of the ways that can improve my speech because sometimes the audience cannot follow my speech. Next, she said that we should put yourself in the audience and prepare the answer for the audience. And, the most important thing is to target your audience because this will make the speech even more effective. In some situations where there are too many kinds of audience, this can enhance the speech by narrowing down the topic, and it will make the speech even easier for both speaker and audience.

Furthermore, we have to practise until we really have full confidence, and that feeling will show out when we speak.

It is very easy to change our persuasive topic to informative, if we do not have strong enough standpoint. There are a lot of questions that need answers. In the informative speech we just aim to inform them the whole facts and let the audiences choose their side. However, in persuasive speech, we do not just inform the facts but we aim to lead them to our perspective of that question and make them believe in our answer.
