Reflective Journal #4: Informative Speech Preparation.

By this time, we have all gained some experience of both speaking, and listening. Many of you have given an impressive effort at integrating the learnings from the classes as well as from the Lucas readings into the development of your speech performances. Well done.

As we move forward on to the next challenge--the Informative Speech--let's continue to add more layers on to the nice foundation we have set.

Your classmates will have posted 11 more tutorial videos for our benefit. While I encourage you to watch all of them at your convenience, for this blog entry, I would like you to watch 2 of them and reflect on your understanding of them.

These topics range from how you develop an informative speech for an audience, how you design an informative speech, and how you use language in different situations.

For this blog post, reflect on 2 tutorial videos from Week 5 and 6 of your choice. Describe any new learnings that you gain from these tutorials, and explain how you are integrating those learnings into your informative speech performance.

Make your first post by Sunday night. Respond to 2 classmates by class time next week.

Remember to include your ID# and Section # in your post. Aj. M

In the first video, I watch about using language appropriately. In the beginning, I think it is a really good idea to explicitly tell the topic that will be mentioned. This will make the speech easier by knowing what will be talked about. In the first topic, it is to use the language depending on the occasion. It is to know what level of language to speak on the occasion to make sure that it will be appropriate. So, I have to make sure that I will use the language correctly in my speech on a particular topic. Next, it is to use language depending on the audience. This is to know what words are too specific which should not be used. I might have to change some words to make it more understandable. Third, using language depends on the topic. Utilizing correct language and emotion in each topic is important. Then, it is to find the most suitable style of speaking for yourselves. Finally, it is to avoid using inclusive language. Before I can give my speech, I have to know what the audiences know, what language to use, and what words are too specific. If I know all of these, I can improve my speech easily.

In the second video, I watch 'Situational Audience Analysis'. So, again, starting with the topic separation can help the audience to follow easier. Then, there are five main topics which are size, physical setting, disposition toward the topic, disposition toward the speaker, and disposition toward the occasion. So, the beginner audience size will be around 30 people. Moreover, trying to set the physical setting can help both speaker and audience more comfortable, in my opinion. I also need to know how much I can speak on a very specific topic by knowing the audience's knowledge and know how to say by knowing audience attitudes toward me and themselves. Lastly, the speech should not be too long and match with the situation. So, I might close the front light, so the slide will be clearer. In addition, I have to make sure about my time limitation and appropriation in the speech. Consequently, this will make the speech more formal and suitable for each situation.

    1. I completely agree with the idea of explicitly tell the topic that will be talking so the audience are prepared to listen to the speech. Also, the ability to know what level of language that appropriate to use in a particular occasion is essential for speaker which including the word that should be use or avoid (technical words). Lastly, I agree that the speech should not be too long and should match with the situation.

The first video spoke about using language clearly. I think this topic is very important especially for us. Because most of us speaking English as a second language. And one of the most difficult part while preparing for any English presentation or speech is finding the proper words to explain our ideas. In this video I learned few tips which are going to help during preparing and presenting my informative speech next week. the first tip is to use familiar words, words that are easy to my audience to understand and avoid technical words. the tip about preparing the outline of the speech. I have to be ready to revise it few times till all the ideas are clear. Moreover, I can practice the speech with digital recorder.
The second video was the types of informative speech. The video explained about the different types of informative speech such as objective, processes, events and concepts. This helped me to select my topic for the informative speech according to these categories. Also Mr. Varit explained in the video about each category guidelines and what should be included for each category. I will use it as a guideline for me while preparing my speech outline.

I agree that one of the most difficult part of preparing for a speech is to find proper words to describe what we want to share to the audience. Familiar words or easy to understand words are what we should use for our speech so that audience can understand what we would like to share. I also agree that we should make sure that our idea is clear.

I completely agree with the idea of using the language properly. Using language as second language is already a difficult task. So, we have to prepare a lot. Therefore, practicing and finding suitable words are important task too. Besides, making a interpretation of recordings to find the basic errors before we actually speak in the platform is a Good idea.

  3. This is the reflection about using language vividly by Proud. I find it to be quite engaging since she had clearly divided each part and provided them with examples. The idea of vividly using this language can become essential to me since it is what keeps the audience’s attention. In the video, she put it mainly into two parts; Imagery and rhythm. First off, imagery is how we can use language in a way such as concrete words, simile, and metaphor to create the atmosphere that we want to interpret. Secondly, rhythm consists of another 4 main parts which are parallelism, repetition, alliteration, and antithesis. All of which is a very useful reminder to play or adjust when we are doing a public speaking.
This is the reflection about situational audience analysis by Cartoon. This is about the situation we should concern when we do a speech. I think it is very interesting to watch since she has detailed information throughout the whole video. There are 5 parts to cover when it comes to the situation analysis. It is to look at the size of the audience, the physical setting of where the speech is being held, the disposition on topic like the audience's interest, knowledge, and attitude, the disposition on the speaker in his/her credibility, and the disposition on the occasion like what manner should be in a specific event. In sum, it is a great way to cover the concern when it comes to the speech’s situation preparation.

The first one I watched is the guidelines for informative speaking, to broader my understanding about informative speech and to prepare myself for it. There're a lot of tips I got from the video, for example, do not overestimate what audience knows since normal people generally know basic idea of the topic you're talking about, a speaker should relate to audience directly by using the word you and yours in a speech, and do not be too technical by trying to avoid specific vocabulary. Most Importantly, you have to personalized your ideas. The connection between audience and your story is very necessary, as well as adding the creativity like visual aids to make it easier to listen and understand.
Next, about how to use language clearly. According to the fact that audiences come from different backgrounds, so we have to avoid misunderstanding that could occur during a speech. Firstly, you have to use familiar words as they're much easier to understand. Secondly, choosing to use concrete words rather than abstract words to be clear about the specific thing a speaker wants to talk about, it could gain your audience's attention as it's easier to recall. Lastly, a speaker have to eliminate clutter. To keep you language clean and lively, such as avoid verbal filters like "you know" and "like".

    Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the use of another person’s language or ideas as their own. Global plagiarism is the stealing of a speech entirely from a single source and claiming that it's their own. To avoid this kind of plagiarism, we do not use only one source, and avoid doing an assignment the night before it is due. Patchwork plagiarism is the use of ideas from two or three sources and using it as if it's their own. To avoid this kind of plagiarism, just like global plagiarism, we need to work on an assignment and prepare for it thoroughly. Incremental plagiarism is the failing to give credit to the original sources used that we borrowed from other people. To avoid this kind of plagiarism, we should use quotations to mark the words of the original source, and use words such as “according to” to give credit. We can also paraphrase some and not give credit, such as the writer's basic facts. However, to paraphrase a writer’s view, we need to report the source. To avoid plagiarism from the internet, we must not copy all information from the internet. We need to take notes of the title of the document, author, the last updated date, and date we access the site, to cite it in a proper format to avoid plagiarism and to give credit where it is due.

    Guideline for Informative Speech

We need to know the audience, and we must not overestimate what the audience knows. We cannot assume that they know what we are talking about, therefore, we need to explain things simply and clearly. Secondly, the topic must relate to the audience to keep the audience interested. We can keep them interested by introducing the speech with questions that start with “Have you ever…?” to create common ground and to make the audience feel relevant to the topic of the speech. Thirdly, don’t be too technical. The audience doesn’t want to learn about complex topics, we must keep things simple and straightforward and easy to understand to keep them interested and follow along the speech. Next, avoid abstractions, because the audience might not be able to relate to it. We need to use comparisons, descriptions, or contrasting ideas instead to make them picture what the speaker is trying to say. We should also personalize our ideas to dramatize the audience. We can do this by providing real life examples to help them understand, this helps the audience get out of their logical thinking and appeal to their emotions, making the speech fun and entertaining. Lastly, we need to be creative, we need to use language imaginatively to make the audience visualize what we are saying, we can also use visual aids to help this. I can use all these pointers and make an entertaining speech, and be well prepared for informative speech coming up.

I think plagiarism is a problem that students and people often overlook and think that it is okay to just copy and paste without citing the sources properly or giving credit to the authors. However, it is considered a crime and unethical, so we should take it seriously and know how to avoid plagiarism.

I think the meaning of plagiarism should be understood by a widely range of people especially students, or people who work by using resources form a different places. Plagiarism could happen intentionally and accidentally. However, the consequences of this is very serious as it is considered as a crime. To avoid this, the understanding of plagiarism and different types of it should be taking in concern.

The first video is about the guideline for informative speech. The new learnings that I gain from this tutorial video is to not overestimate what the audience knows, this is because they may have heard or know about the topic beforehand, but not in the deeper level or in great detail. I also learned that we should avoid abstractions, try to relate the subject directly to the audience and personalize our ideas as much as we can. I will integrate these learnings into my informative speech by keeping information clear, simple, and explaining all the necessary information in detail. I will find the topic that fascinates the audience to keep them interested and use real life examples to help them understand better. It is also imperative to avoid technical terms. Instead I should use languages imaginatively, be creative, and try to use the term ‘You’ and ‘Your’ to capture audience attention.

Additionally, the second video is about using language vividly. The new learnings are to use concrete words rather than abstract words to enhance clarity and to create a picture that we can see. Simile is to use the words “like” or “as” to make comparisons. Metaphor is an implicit comparison, but not using the words “like” or “as”. Alliteration is a repetition of the first sound at the beginning of the words. For my informative speech, I plan to use concrete words to create actions, ideas and mental images, but also try not to overuse Simile because it will not benefit the speech. I believe that using vivid language will make my speech more powerful, meaningful and make the audience remember what I say better than just using ordinary words/phrases.

The first video is “Guideline for informative speaking”. First thing that I have learnt is that do not overestimate what the audience know, the tutorial said that speaker should explain what they are talking about clearly and simply. Make sure the audience understand what you are talking about. At first I thought using the word “you” or “your” is informal, however, the tutorial said that using the words “you” and “your” will significantly increase audience attention. Also, avoid technical terms even in a general topic, try to explain it as easy to understand as possible. In addition, personalize idea of the speech by dramatize the audience in human term by using real life example or your own experiences. Lastly, creativity is important for making a great speech. From this tutorial, I will integrate these 6 tips into my informative speech. I will try to select topic that will interest the audience as well as myself so I can explain it to the audience as simple and clear as I can.

For second video, “Adapting to audience”, one of the hardest tasks for every speaker even the experienced one is to be able to see thing from other people point of view. The speaker should put him/herself into audience’s shoe by asking them self what audience need. For instance, do they need more or less detail, explanation, example or what will interest them. Anticipate how the audience will respond and be creative to think about ways to adapt your message to them. Avoid technical words and prepare visual aids to help audience understand you. Furthermore, keep in mind that during the speech, things might not go exactly like your plan, however, DO NOT PANIC. Also, always keep an eye out during your speech for audience feedback. If their expression seems ok, they might understand you but if their expression is opposite, try to explain more or go over your point again. From this tutorial, I will try to put myself into audience’s shoe by integrating questions such as what will interest my audience, what my audience will like or dislike.

    2. I totally agree that we should always consider our listeners' backgrounds and opinions. By putting ourselves in their shoes, we would be able to better design our speeches to suit their interest. It is also surprising to me that I should look for the responses from my audience during the presentation. For me, it would be hard to look for those clues at the same time as when discussing a topic. However, it should help me to reflect on my speech well, so I'll try. Also, I think this will enhance eye contact.

    Using Language Vividly
Martin Luther King is an example of using language vividly. What he might say is short of what he says. He makes his speech more attractive by using imagery and rhythm. Imagery is the use of language to create mental images of objects, actions, or ideas. And three ways of imagery are concrete words, simile, and metaphor. Rhythm is the pattern of sound created by the choice and the arrangement of words. There are four ways to generate rhythm it is parallelism, repetition, alliteration, and antithesis. Using langue vividly can improve my speech by making my speech more attractive and more rememberable rather than simple phrases.

    Guideline for Informative speech
From the videos, I have learned some tips when preparing for the speech which can be useful for the speaker and the audience. It is not just about when you are speaking. You have to start from the preparation phase. For example, when speaking the topic should be related to the listener. This will keep the audience interested and continue to listen to your speech and also always try to interact with them to keep them following with you. During the speech, the speech should not be too technical and try to avoid abstract because some audience would not be able to understand and you might lose them along the way. This will make me think wisely when preparing for the speech. Also, it makes me think what if I was the listener will I like what I talk about.

The first video I watched is “adapting to audience”. According to the video, there are 2 main parts including adapting before the speech and during the speech. I learned that during preparation and rehearsal, you should assess how your audience is likely to respond and adjust what you say to make it as clear as possible. During the speech, things may not go exactly as planned. Hence, do not panic. There’s always another solution. It is easier said than done, but
I believe that I can apply this to my informative speech by trying to think inside of audience’s shoes.

    Using language vividly
What I got from this video is that there are 3 ways to create imagery which are choosing concrete words over abstract words, using simile introduced with the word “like” or “as”, and using metaphor which is an implicit comparison. Moreover, I will integrate this into my speech by using simile to make comparisons. By doing this, my speech will be more interesting, and easier to remember.

First video clip was Guideline for informative speech by Dear. The first idea was about giving the information to the audience. Don’t assume that they already know what you are saying, try to explain when you are talking about the topic that is not commonly talked about. The second tip was about how to grab the audience’s attention. You must find the topic that is related to the audience. You may want to start the speech with a question such as “Have you ever…?” . Another point was to not be too technical, we should be concerned with what can be explained to the audience and what can not. You should avoid technical terms and make the speech easy to catch up. Lastly, you should avoid abstraction and use real life examples to help them understand.

The second video clip was about types of informative speech by Gun. First was speeches about the object, it is the speech that focuses on the purpose of your aspect on the object. It is anything that is visible, tangible, and stable in form. The second one was speeches about processes. The speech will be about how something is done or made, for example, how The US currency is made, how to write the effective job resume. This type of speech can also be divided into two kinds. First was to help the listener understand something better. The second kind was to help the listener improve themselves. The third one was speeches about events. This type of speech was about things that happen, but you have to choose the topic wisely and pick a specific purpose. Last was speeches about concept. The topic will be about beliefs, theory, ideas, and principles. This type of speech will be more complicated than the other kind of speech.

In the first video, Adapting to the audience, I have learned that preparing for your speech alone is most of the time, not enough for you to deliver your best speech. Regardless of how well you have prepared beforehand, you will have to adapt accordingly to your audience while you are giving your speech to make it the most effective. There are a few things to bear in mind for when you are giving speeches like don’t panic, always look for facial expressions, be prepared for questions that may arise. However, there are some key things that you should be aware of when facing different situations during a speech. For example, If your prepared visual aid is not working, try to find another way to present your visual aid (using gesture, etc.), if the audience is larger than what you have expected, adjust your volume to match the size of the audience, or if the time limit is shorter, try to keep your speech short and fir in the time frame.

The second video, Using language appropriately. I have learned that when giving a speech you should use your language according to some important factors. Those factors include occasion (the language used in speaking in a classroom and in a hotel ballroom should be different.), the audience (your audience might not know, for example, technical terms, so you should be aware and avoid confusing them.), Topic (you should use language that matches your topic, for example, if the topic is technical and complicated, you need to use proper language, while, on the other hand, if the topic is straight forward, you could use straight forward language.), and lastly, speaker (you have to develop your own style of speaking and your own style of language, you should be comfortable giving your own speech and not trying to become someone else.). I also learned to avoid inclusive language.

I agree with this comment because it is important to adapt the speech to the audience. Even though we know who will be our audiences, it is better to flexible and knows how to adapt ourselves to situations at all times. Apart from that, it is important to use appropriate languages accordingly to the types of occasions, audiences, topics, and speakers. This helps to avoid bias and make the speech to become formal and suitable for particular circumstances.

The second video is about using language clearly. I learned that a good speaker should convey the message clearly by keeping the speech easy to follow and simple. To do that, we need to use familiar words because the audience may not understand the technical terms. Moreover, we should choose concrete words since they are more specific and are less likely to misinterpret. For example, the word basketball is more specific than the word physical activity. The first video i watched was about how to use language appropriately. I learned that there is four main factors that I should take into account when adjusting my language to suit the speech. These four factors are the occasion, audiencs, topic and speaker. I can apply what I learned in this video into my informative speech by thinking about the four factors when I am writing my speech and I would be avoid using the phrases such as you guys or slangs.

The second video I watch was the video tutorial about guidelines for informative speech. There were many takeaways from this tutorial. Examples of the takeaways are as a speaker we should always try to relate the subject directly to the audience by using the words you and your can really help. We should also use comparisons and contrast to help describe what you are talking about. I can apply what I leaned in the video by try to be more inclusive with my use of language by using more you and your.

From the “Guideline for Informative Speech” video, I have learnt many different tricks that would help me succeed in making an informative speech. First of all, we should never overestimate the audience’s knowledge; we should not assume that they will know what we are talking about. In addition, we should also relate the subject directly to the audience in order to increase their attention and understanding. Furthermore, it is a great idea to avoid technical terms so that our speech will be straightforward and easy to catch up. Using the different tricks from this tutorial, I strongly believe that the overall quality of my informative speech will greatly improve and that the audience will be able to understand and relate to my speech more.

From the “Using Language Vividly” video, I have learnt the different language tools that we, as speakers, can use. The first one is imagery: speakers can use vivid languages to create mental images of objects, actions, or ideas. Some ways of implementing imagery into our speech include using concrete words, simile, and metaphor. The next tool we can use is rhythm which help enhances flow and meaning of our speech. The fours ways to generate rhythm include parallelism, repetition, alliteration, and antithesis. To implement these language tools into my speech, I will try to use multiple imageries and rhythms in order to enhance the audience's understanding and to improve the flow of my speech.

The first video I watched was “Guidelines for Informative Speaking”. It was a topic about the steps you should follow when having an informative speech. First of all, you should explain the details thoroughly. Audiences may only know the general idea of the topic, so you should not overestimate what the audiences know and assume they understand everything. Secondly, I learned that using pronouns such as “you” and “yours” help audiences have a closer understanding of the speaker’s ideas (they could relate more). Thirdly, you should use descriptive language and avoid abstractions. Tell the story as if the audience is with us when the events happen. By integrating this new information, I could have an idea on the range of topics I should choose. The speech should not bore audiences, and it should be creative in terms of the languages used and the personal story behind.

The second video, “Using language clearly”, refers to the method of choosing the right word choices in a speech. I learned that instead of using technical words, we should use familiar words so audiences can understand more precisely of either the process or to generally grasp the idea of what you are presenting. Furthermore, when discussing a certain topic, try to describe it specifically or else it will come off as being too vague. Lastly, try to eliminate clutter because it will make your phrases seem redundant and the audience may find it hard to understand. To integrate this learning into my informative speech, I will try reading it out loud and remove any redundant or unnecessary word phrases. This will make the speech seem more straightforward to the points.

The first video that I watched is called using language appropriately. I learnt that before you proceed to give a speech, you need to be acknowledged with the occasion and who your audience members are. By knowing what the occasion is, you are able to use the right body language, tone, voice, information presented more appropriately. With knowing the audience, you are able to pick up vocabulary that they are familiar with or even their field of interest so your speech becomes more attractive. You have to learn how to avoid inclusive language. Inclusive language is the language that avoids the use of certain expressions or words that might be considered to exclude particular groups of people. If the topic is more technical, then you need to use different vocabs to portray your topic to be factual and believable.

The second video that I watched is about using clear language. In order to become a good speaker in front of an audience, a clear message should be conveyed and you have to keep the speech easy and simple for the audience to follow through. IN order to do this, like Mr. Matthew gave an example in class, we should use vocab that is easy for the audience to understand so they can follow on what were about to say in the speech. These words include concrete words. this is because they are specific and won't be easily misinterpreted. Eliminating clutter is also very important. This means you need to keep the language clean and avoid phrases that are too condensed.

For Topic I should choose the word that matches with my topic. Lastly for the audience I should be comfortable giving my own speech and not trying to become someone else.

The second video is about the informative speech guideline. This video taught me a lot of useful information. The first video I watched is about plagiarism. I learned that there are 3 types of plagiarism that can affect you negatively if it was caught. First, Global Plagiarism is when you steal a speech from a single source and make it your own which often happen when we don’t have enough time to prepare the speech. Second, patch work plagiarism is when you steal a speech or ideas from couple sources and make it as your own. Third, incremental plagiarism is when you fail to give credits to the sources. To avoid plagiarism, we should start early and be prepared. Always give quotation to the source by using “according to” or “says”. Do not forget that when paraphrasing, we still need to give credit to the source. Finally, Keep in mind that citation is a speaker’s ethical responsibility.

The second video I watched is about using language appropriately. We need to use words that are suitable for occasions, audience, topic and speaker. There are things that we need to be careful because some words can hurt the listener’s feeling such as off-color words and profanity. And also the special vocabularies should change depend on the audience. For the speaker, we should try to find you own style. From this video, I learned that I have to be more aware of using generic pro nouns like “he” (use they instead) or the words that end with “man”(use person). Moreover, we should use appropriate groups name that they use identify themselves, for example, use gay men or lesbians instead of homosexuals.

This will help avoid confusion for me during the speech in order to inform the audience on the point I actually focus on and increase the clarity in a way that which part of the information I try to explain to the audiences.

However, the video teaches me to focus to use plural pronouns in order to maintain equality between men and women. Moreover, the words used are also important. For example, do not overestimate what the audience knows as we cannot assume that they will not or not know what we are talking about; hence, try to keep simple and clear. In addition, the most important suggestion would be do not be too technical like avoiding technical words and keep it straightforward and easy so the audience can easily understand the topic we are talking about although they have not heard about it before. Also, personalize the idea by putting some real life example to help the audience understand. From this tutorial video, it is very useful to guide me how to develop my speech and things that I need to concern about so that I can put some of examples and changing some script to be more easier and simple to follow.

The second video I watched is about the plagiarism. The video taught me what is plagiarism and different types of it. For example, Patchwork plagiarism is the way one stealing a idea or words from two or more than three sources and passing them off as one’s own. Also, a global plagiarism which is about stealing one’s speech from a single source and made to be one’s own. As for plagiarism, taking words from different sources and combining them to make it sound like your own can be classified as patchwork plagiarism. When researching information on your own topic, it is crucial to avoid doing so.

The first video discusses the guideline for informative speech. There are many tips from watching this video. First is not overestimating what the audience understandings, as the audience will also have knowledge of the topic. So, we need to clarify it briefly, keeping it quick and straightforward. We should also guide the topic to the audience in order to make the audience curious and want to hear more about it. We could ask them questions or use the term "you" and "your" to engage the audience. Finally, we need to personalize our concept and be innovative.

The second video I watched was about plagiarism. There are three forms of plagiarism that, once detected, may have serious consequence. Firstly, when you take a speech from a particular source and call it your own, which happens often when you don't have enough time to plan the speech, you are committing global plagiarism. Secondly, patchwork plagiarism is when you snatch a speech or ideas from a couple of sites and call them your own. Third, incremental plagiarism is where you forget to allocate credits to the author. Therefore, we should plan ahead and be prepared to avoid plagiarism. Often use "according to" or, "says" to quote the source. Don't forget that we still need to give credit to the source while paraphrasing.

The second video that I watched was using language clearly made by Pat Napat. The three major ideas were to use familiar words, choose concrete words, and eliminate clutter. Firstly, use familiar words, it is essential to use words that your audience can easily understand. If your terms are too technical or difficult, then the audience will not be able to perceive the idea you are trying to tell them. Keep it short, sharp, and simple. Secondly, use concrete words, concrete words will help your audience to visualize what you are talking about. Concrete words are usually more specific than abstract words. Lastly, eliminate clutter, avoid cluttering. Avoid verbal filters and avoid using redundant, unnecessary, and flabby words or phrase.

From the Lucas Tutorial Video on “Guidelines for informative speaking”, I have learnt some tips that would get my audience involves in my speech. Firstly, one way of grabbing the listeners’ attention is to talk about the point from their side, such as by using the word ‘you’ or ‘yours’. It is important to note that this is because they would obviously want to listen to topics that are related to them. Secondly, avoid using technical terms, but instead I should put them into simple and clear words and descriptions with examples. Then, I learnt that abstraction should be avoided in this type of speech. Instead, I could describe external events and internal feelings using concrete words, so the audience would feel like they are in the same situation with us. Lastly, I should use real-life examples and personal terms. For my own informative speech, I would be sure to describe the scene in the bts sky train clearly so my audience can experience the same feeling that I do. Moreover, I should design carefully how I will explain about deafness so that my audience would understand how deaf people feel.

From the Lucas Tutorial Video on “Audience Centeredness”, I just learnt the two very important vocabularies to my speech: audience centeredness and identification. Firstly, to be audience-centered is to always consider the audience during speech preparation and presentation. Then, identification is to connect to your audience by underlining your common goals, values and experience. To be more precise, a strong method would be to show your empathy and respect towards your listeners regardless of the difference in opinions. All in all, I should always prioritize my audience’s background of interest and knowledge, such as how much do my audience know about a sign language. Use familiar words 2.) choose concrete words (the more specific the word is = being more concrete ) 3.) Eliminate clutter. These tips should be used to avoid misunderstandings as people come from different backgrounds and react to things differently. Moreover, the video taught us to use sharp words that is not too technical and avoid verbal filters such as ‘you know’, ‘like’, and ‘really’. These learnings can be integrated in my informative speech by knowing what words should I use, and what should I avoid, to make my speech more effective and interesting.

It is to present another person’s language or ideas and presented it as your own and this has huge consequences such as damage to your career, expulsion from school, or crime. There are mainly 3 types of plagiarism which are Global, patchwork, and Incremental. A bunch of informations on the internet are coming from everywhere in the world, so we should respect the owner and ourselves by following the right manner. This video is presented 3 different types of plagiarism. First type is the Global plagiarism, it is when they copy the entire text from a single source without any paraphrase. Second type is the Patchwork plagiarism, this is when they combine a couple sources together by using their idea or language and pass it as their own. Lastly, the Incremental plagiarism is when they do not give the credit to the sources that they are using. However, if the information is the basic fact, it this case the credit is not necessary. To avoid all of this problems, the first thing is to start working as soon as possible, do not leave until last minute, because you might easily make mistake. Also, keep in mind to put the title of the document, the author or organisation, the last updated dare, and the date you accessed the site for the citation.

Situational audience analysis breaks down into 5 factors: size, physical setting, disposition towards the topic, speaking, and occasion. I have learned that the physical setting can actually have a profound impact on how willing the audience is to listen to the speaker. Even if the settings are completely out of your control, you can still adjust yourself to make yourself seem much more interesting. It is also important to take how much the audience knows about the chosen topic into consideration because they will find topics that they have some background knowledge about more appealing. As the speaker, your audience is likely to have a certain expectation about you and it is crucial for us to make an estimation of what it is. Lastly, preparing your speech to match the theme of the occasion is what would make your speech successful.

The second video I chose to watch is about using language clearly. It breaks down into 3 main points, which are: use familiar words, choose concrete words, and eliminate clutter. Using familiar words refers to avoiding big words or words that are technical because that could cause confusion for the audience. It is better to stick with simple words as that would still get the message across. Concrete words are words that are less abstract, which makes them much more persuading and clear. As for eliminating clutter, it is better that we do not make our sentences too wordy because that would mean that the listeners would have to put in more effort to understand what you are trying to convey. There is literally no point in cluttering.

I have learnt that the larger the audience, the more formal your speech should be. Also for the physical setting, it can influence your audiences' willingness to accept your idea or to listen to you. However, if we cannot control the setting, we can still make ourselves as interesting as possible to keep the audience engaged.

The next video I watched is plagiarism. I learnt that the most unforgivable case is global plagiarism. It is when stealing a speech entirely from a single source and passing it off as one's own. So an example would be a student is doing her work at the last minute, and she decides to download a speech from the internet written by her friend, and then calls her own. Another type of plagiarism is patchwork plagiarism, which is when you take information from two or three sources and pass it off as your own. It is important to get a grab of the size of your audience, since the bigger it is, the more formal your speech should be. The speaker's attitude toward the topic, audience, and the occasion also influence the success of his or her speech. Therefore, one should not be bias and should act professional.

Using the inclusive language may avoid any type of discrimination that can potentially lead to conflict.

I agree with him because nowadays plagiarism can be very easy and sometimes we didn't mean to. So we have to be careful when using other's information and we have to learn how to cite it properly.

I strongly agree that plagirism is often used without the author's awareness, often in English essays. It could be a heavy punishment since plagirism is basically copying and using other people's ideas. Therefore, we should be careful in citing and intepreting it into our own words to avoid plagirism.

I also learned the same thing from the "Using language appropriately" video. And I strongly agree that the inclusive language is very important for know to be aware of and for one to use in order to avoid conflicts.
