Reflective Journal #7: The Specific Purpose for an Academic Presentation.

Now we are looking forward to our final challenge of the term. Hopefully by now, we have had several opportunities to see what people do well, what makes good speeches and presentations, and reflect on our own strengths and weaknesses.

We have analyzed what makes good speakers, and what makes speeches work as either informative or persuasive. Personally speaking as one of your audience members, I am heartened by the commitment of so many of you to the course, and to your own development through each challenge, even under the difficult circumstances that we are in. Thank you sincerely for this.

As always, the first and very important step to high quality speaking is identifying our specific purpose. For this final group presentation, you have to decide on your purpose, to inform or persuade. And then clearly the next question is: Persuade Or Inform... about what?

The same considerations are at play: Who is your audience? What will be relevant for them? What do you need to do to achieve your purpose?

For this post, this is a first chance to propose a topic and purpose. With this post, you can also see what other groups are planning to do, so you want to differentiate yourselves from others to be unique and memorable. And remember the theme: Living in Uncertain Times.

Please introduce your topic idea. Generally, what is the idea? Explain it briefly, and then state your Specific PurposeWe want to inform / persuade our audience that...

Only 1 group member needs to make this post, but please include all group members' ID numbers in the post. I will be responding to each post to give preliminary feedback. Of course groups can change their minds about topic ideas after this post, but it is best to make this decision as early as possible. There is no need to respond to each other's posts for this one. Please make your post by Sunday night. Aj. M

Our topic idea is Asians hate. In our today society, there is an ongoing movement #stopasianshate on social media and there has been a rise in the numbers of hate crimes against Asian globally.
Our specific purpose: we want to inform our audience about discrimination against Asians.

    1. A current and very important topic. Keep going. A question that I am curious about is this: Is this a new phenomenon (that some people attribute to the pandemic originating in China)... Or has the racial hate always been there? And now it is coming out into the open.

Our topic idea: Fast fashion/ trend: an influence of the social media and influence of the globalizing world

Since the younger generation such as us are becoming more interested and intertwined with social media and online shopping platforms, enabling them to buy/ sell in a short period of time. Furthermore, social media and its popularity are making their user more obsessed with the looks of themselves/ other’s perception towards one’s self, resulting in the fast-moving fashion trends as well as the fast trends.

    (This may include other influencers)
(Is it only happened in Thailand or worldwide)

    1. A good start, but as you suggest, there is room to focus this. Do you see a link between fast fashion and social media? Do they work together? In other words, you may be arguing about a cause/effect between the rise of social media and the "fast fashion" industry. Is this right?

Topic Idea: Mind uploading is a promising future technology that allows our mind to live forever in the human world. Today, we are all at high risk of mortality any day and anytime; mind uploading could be the key solution to this.

Specific Purpose: We want to inform our audience about mind uploading, a promising future technology.

    1. It is fascinating. I am not aware of developments in this area. Is this a real development happening now, or is this still in the area of science-fiction? For a good academic speech topic, it needs to be something current, with information that you can cite. If you have the support for this topic, then keep going.

Topic Idea: We're living in uncertain times where many people lose hope. Hope is very necessary because it could affect everyone in many aspects like family, works, health, and mental health. We would like to recommend the way to find hope in uncertain times.

Specific Purpose: To inform our audience about how hope affects our life and suggest ways to find hope in uncertainty

    1. I like this. But it is also at high risk of being overly general/abstract. For example, to make it real, we are seeing an epidemic of hopelessness in the world today, leading to an extraordinary spike in mental illness of all degrees, across the world. Does this suggest that it is harder to find sources of hope than it used to be? Are there aspects of modern life that makes this an important topic for us today? Work to establish this.

Topic idea: Living in a period of time that industry development is advancing way too fast which often causes consequences on the environment and thus the consequences do lead to natural disasters. We believe that everyone should be responsible for this action. Therefore, we would like to propose a solution to solve this problem, and one of the effective methods that many countries start to encourage every industry to apply when planning new plants is the Carbon Credit.

Specific purpose: We want to inform our audience that we are all responsible for the environment and our proposed solutions towards reducing human’s impact on the environment to further prevent natural disasters is Carbon Credit.

    1. I really like how specific this purpose is. Keep going with this. But as always, work to make it relatable. For example, show how the carbon credit system could work in an economy like Thailand, and work to show what effects it would have on industry, but also on the environment.

    First possible topic:
Topic idea: The effect of social media on mental health. In this rapid changing environment, the flow of ideas, especially those displayed on social media platforms posed as a huge impact on the mental health of an individual. During this covid outbreak, people have been relying on social media platforms to receive information such as news and updates. Unconsciously, they may have been negatively influenced by the social media and increase in the risk of anxiety, depression, etc.

Special purpose: We want to inform our audiences about the potential risks of danger that is intertwined between social media and themselves.

    Second possible topic:
Living in this uncertain times, things are rapidly changing. History is repeating itself, but humans are always underestimating things right before their own eyes. For example, this covid pandemic. Even with the information from past events (SARs, MERs, etc), we can't actually predict what might happen in the future. Not everything is under our control. Furthermore, people only sink in realization after things actually happen.

Specific purpose: we want to persuade our audience that history is repeating itself, but we can take actions to break the routine.

    1. I recommend the second topic idea. The first one is important, but it has been done in some version by other students in the class already. I like the focus on the importance of history, and humanity's constant failure to learn from it. And relating the topic specifically to the pandemic is interesting. This suggests that when the next pandemic comes (hopefully not soon), will we be better equipped to deal with it? Or are we at high risk of making the same mistakes again?

Topic idea: We are living through a pandemic and so many of us have to deal with challenges that can be stressful. The importance of smiling is often overlooked by many during dark times.

Specific purpose: To inform our audience about the benefits and the underlying psychology that smiling really does make a difference under stressful times.

    1. I appreciate how specific the topic is. Do you think this works better as an informative speech or a persuasive speech? Is the intention to simply inform the audience? Or are you challenging the audience to make deliberate efforts to smile more, and to improve their well-being? Consider this.

nowadays, the Artificial Intelligence is taking a place as one of the most promising technology, as the future will depend on this technology.

    1. This can work, but it needs to be narrowed. I guess we can expect that AI will become part of almost every aspect of our lives in the future... as students, as parents, as workers, as citizens, etc. I recommend that you narrow to a particular area of life, where AI will be truly revolutionary, and maybe in the not-so-distant future. Something that is already in development and not far away. I hope this helps.
