Reflective Journal #3: Speaking to Inform.

At the Google Classroom (and also posted here) is a speech by Prof. Amy Cuddy. This isn't just any regular Ted Talk. It is the 2nd most viewed Ted Talk of all time. And guess what, it is about confidence, and making ourselves powerful when we need to be, in many situations including public speaking.

This is an informative speech. It is also an academic speech with lots of research, data, charts and graphs.

But you will also note that the research and data is also supported with examples and stories that make the academic knowledge real and personal. This is no doubt one reason why this speech has resonated so deeply with so many people.

For this Reflective Journal post, I want you to observe 3 things.

1) Note how she uses Spoken References, mentioning the names of sources whose work she is citing. 2) Consider how she personalizes the speech, and how she uses common and easy-to-understand illustrations to help the audience relate to the academic content. And 3) make one more observation about the speech making.

Think of 1 more point that we have reviewed from Lucas that you can apply to Amy Cuddy's content and delivery. My hope is that these observations will give you ideas about your own preparation and design for your Informative Speech presentation.

Remember to include your ID# in your post. Please make your first post by Sunday, and then respond to two of your classmates by next week. Aj. M

She would make a point and would explain what she meant by it. After that, she would talk about examples that would name the person, their career, the university they work at, and provide data and conclusion of the researches that person conducted. This helps make the speech more credible and informative. She also talked about how she personally connected to the topic, to not fake it till you make it, but fake it till you become it, since she felt out of place when she got enrolled in a prestigious university. Furthermore, she talked about body language and showed us some very obvious examples of poses of high-power and low-power to make us visualize easier. The graphs and illustrations are very easy simple and easy to understand, to keep the audience interested in the speech. An observation that I got from her speech is that you can interact with the audience, or crack a joke, but it is a gamble. Also, when she uses data from other sources, she cited it completely, or give credit to the source during the speech as well.

    1. I also agree with you that way she uses spoken references is very effective and easy for the audiences to understand. Furthermore her quote: "to not fake it till you make it, but fake it till you become it", positively change my life perspective. I now know the way to boost up my self-confident during interviews and to feel more powerful when I needed to be.

I have a similar opinion with you about the part where you said that she gives credit to all her sources whilst she speaking and she beautifully incorporated the part where she is giving credit to the information or statistics itself. Her quote was also another memorable part of her speech where is said to not fake it until you make it but to fake it until you become it.

I agree with what you have written especially the way she gave credits to those researchers while giving her speech which make her speech more credible and informative. I am also impressed with her slogan-like phrase which is "to not fake it till you make it, but fake it till you become it" as well as the way she added funny jokes into her speech which spice thing up a bit.

During the speech, Amy Cuddy uses multiple Spoken References, mentioning different sources. From my observation, Amy is using these references to provide a stronger back up to what she is saying. For example, she provides multiple evidences from ‘trustworthy’ people (such as researchers) to back up her statement on the effect of body language on 'judgement' which increases the credibility of her statement. In addition, Amy also tries to personalize her speech by referring to her personal stories in proving her points. For instance, to prove her “fake it until you become it” point, she speaks about her own personal incidence of shifting from being an ‘imposter’ to actually becoming who she is today. Furthermore, Amy also includes some visual aids to make it easier for the audience to understand what she is trying to say. For example, when she is talking about the 'job interview’ experiment, she includes easy-to-understand pictures of the different poses of job interviewers, making it easier for the audience to visualize and understand what she is trying to say about high and low-power poses. An observation that I made about Amy’s speech making is about her body language and gestures. For me, her natural gestures help magnify her truthfulness, attitude, and feelings. It also creates communicative bonds and interactions with the audience which significantly boosts the overall quality of her speech.

Her credibility is high since she provides sources from many references, as well as choosing a group of trustworthy resources. Not to mention the fact that she also talk about her personal experiences and connect it to her point to even make her presentation becomes much more credible. I strongly agree to your point that Amy's gestures are stable and clean, they makes her look more professional, elegant, and confident on the stage.

I totally agree with you to the point that Amy Cuddy used various sources from the trustworthy people which this makes her speech to be valid. Moreover, the point that she used the experiment such as job interview help people illustrate much easier. Therefore, because all of these points, they make Amy Cuddy's speaking to be valid and interesting.

I agree with you that her use of various resources to back up her statement did increases her credibility to the speech. Her quote "to not fake it till you make it, but fake it till you become it" help audiences such as myself relate to the topic even more; it also inspires me on different aspects. I also agree that her confident postures and attitudes made her become a better speechmaker.

Amy uses spoken references by naming those people (such as Nalini Ambady), even followed by the name of the multiple institution or the conclusive university, and informing data about those researches. I would say there’re more than 6 resources, this's the main point which made her speech becomes very reliable and credible. She also provides pictures and illustrations along the speech, as well as including a video clip and jokes to help entertaining the audiences. Trauma from her personal experience she told is also deep and meaningful as she uses simple and clear language of her own style to make it very emotional. I could feel like she's being herself, representing how she wants others to see her on the stage. Despite the fact that her topic is very general since it’s relatable to every people, Amy gives many examples about poses and experiments on body language, including both statistical and scientific way like graphs and percentages to clarify her point as well. The additional observation from me is that her speech is very interesting to listen to because she’s very enthusiastic and expert about the topic of body language she shares with us. Moreover, she also speaks with a pleasant voice as she makes eye contact and expressions throughout the speech, to connect and interact with the audiences as much as possible.

I agree that using a lot of reliable sources would make the speech much more credible and makes it look as if if we do it, we will surely make it. It is also great that you pointed out that her speech is very general and appeal to a lot of people and is informing the people about what they already know, but some tweaks and lots of graphs, pictures, and studies makes it such an impactful speech.

    3. It is true that you could really feel Cuddy's genuineness and she has achieved this by incorporating visual aids along with emotional stories into the speech. As claimed above, she has cited multiple credible sources which, I agree, makes the speech appear very reliable.

She starts by saying the person's names following by the career of the person and place of that particular occupation before saying the information that she wants to give. So, while she is giving the audience knowledge with some difficulties about the information, she will provide some pictures and video clips for the audience. This is for a better understanding. Moreover, when she wants to say about some experiments. For example, when she is talking about hormones. She shows the graph that can be viewed easily, and this will make the information easier to follow. When she talks, she always gives some questions to the audience to think about. I think this is one of the ways to get audience interaction. Nevertheless, it is in the mind. In addition, she also tells her unfortunate past about the car accident, and this makes her feel powerless. During the talk, she can connect her past experience with the audience's experience. She also gives the conclusion to the experiment so that the audiences can follow the experiment easily or if they get lost during the beginning of the experiment. Moreover, she also does some postures when she gives the example to the audience, so the audience will see more picture about what she is saying. She also always tries to make eye contact during the talk, so this will help her to get the interaction with the audience. In the end, she also gives the audience some conclusion of the talk, so that the audience can remember her speech.

I couldn’t agree more that the way she asked the audience some questions was a great interaction. Apart from that, she related her tragedy to the speech well which made the audience felt empathy, and her conclusion in the end of the speech was very effective since it made the audience remember the important point of her speech.

Amy’s speech is informative yet personal and also relates to a wide range of people. Whenever she gave out data, she always cited the source and an organization or institution of that data. It is not only a way to give credit to the source but it also makes her speech more credible. She started the speech with data, numbers and graphs which are well organized and easy to follow along. She also put some funny video clips and pictures to gain the audience's attention. Then she showed the experiment and results about high power poses and low power poses which she put lots of pictures on the slides. She talked naturally when she told her story about a college student. She linked her personal experience to other's stories and then to the audience as well. She even got emotional in the middle of the story and that makes a big impact. Another observation that I notice is that Amy smiled throughout the whole speech and that shows how passionate she is.

She has done well in incorporating her experiences into her speech allowing audiences to relate to her topic. Her smile throughout the speech allows audiences to feel at ease and makes everything looks smooth and natural.

  6. 6329007 Napat Pracharktam (Section 1)

Firstly, Amy Cuddy used spoken references in a concise way by mentioning the name of the researchers and where he or she came from before referring to his or her findings. This, consequently, increases the reliability of the point she was making. Secondly, she was able to personalize her speeches by using anecdotal evidence of her observation in an MBA classroom and of her childhood car accident. Moreover, she also asked questions in which the answers are universal. For example, what kind of person you would want as your leader, and the answer would be more or less an individual who is assertive and less stress reactive. This implied to the audience that her speech was worth listening to because it was relevant to everyone. Furthermore, she was not afraid to be funny. This creates the atmosphere that the audience would want to continue listening since the speech was not only informative but also enjoyable. Apart from that, her illustrations were obvious –what we see in our everyday life –and we even do these non-verbal languages ourselves like opening our hands and lifting our chins up when we win a physical strength competition. The bar charts were also simple and easy to understand with the different in colors of different elements. Lastly, my another observation is that she underlined the main point for a few times to make sure that the audience really grasped her point, and especially at the end she would summarize the data or the findings she just presented. Thus, she could precisely and effectively convey the main message to all her audience which was “Fake it until you become it!” Also, most of the times, she elaborated on words, phrases, or sentences that are content specific (hormones: testosterone and cortisol) or mean differently to different people (mind) to ensure that the audience followed the right track, increasing her credibility in making the speech on this topic.

I also agree with you about the question she asks to connect the presentation with the audiences, which is a quite strong point in her speech. Also, her sense of humor makes a nice atmosphere towards the audiences as well. Lastly, she eases scientific vocabularies (like name of hormones) for a normal people, as to be able to follow and understand the effects of them on human behaviors. She's very professional.

The way she has made her speech unique is definitely how she was able to bring humor and asking general questions that many have an answer to. Visual aids were also used effectively, which helped get the message across to the audience.

  7. Mananchaya Punsiri 6329021 Section 2

Firstly, Professor Amy Cuddy uses Spoken References by referring to the name of the researcher followed by the research institute(college). This way of integrating the name of the sources allows the audiences to understand specifically where the source of information comes from.

Secondly, she personalized her speech by using real people and real stories as examples on her visual aids such as showing the video clip of the presidents shaking and not shaking hands. Even in her experiments, instead of showing tremendous amounts of pie charts, graphs, and statistical numbers. She explains the process of her experiments by using pictures and shows her results by using just a few graphs. This allows the audience to easily make connections with the academic content.

Thirdly, she tells her own story and real experience of her student, which makes informal speech more personal and not just all about the academic. Her story allows us to reflect on our lives and significantly impact the way we can change our mind, body, and behaviors to become more powerful and dominant.

Lastly, the point from the Lucas video that I can apply to her content and delivery is the speaker's body. She appears natural and her non-verbal communication such as gestures, facial expressions, and actions all come out beautifully, appropriately, and suites well with her topic. She also smiles often to her audiences, which makes the audiences feel connected with her and see her as a more competent speaker.

For example, she talked about soundless 30 second video of physician and patient interaction conducted by Nalini Ambady, a researcher at Tufts University. She personalizes the speech by telling story of her car accident that relates to her student story. Her illustrations are easy to understand which makes the speech easy to follow. For instance, she uses simple bar graphs to show the increasing of testosterone and the decreasing of cortisol to help the audience relate to such scientific content. From observation, her conclusion is strong “to not fake it till you make it, but fake it till you become it” She also suggests the audience to raise their testosterone and reduce their cortisol by posing high-power poses before next stressful evaluative situation. She smoothly integrated her sources whilst she is giving her speech. Some examples in her speech would be when she was talking about 30 second soundless clip research where she credited her source Nalini Ambardy, a researcher from Tufts University, or she said dubbed as the Wonder Woman by the media.

She personalizes her speech by giving us a personal anecdote about a tragedy that occur to her when she was young. Then she linked her personal story to the informative speech she is giving. Illustration was another highlight of her speech. All the illustrations she uses was large, so it is easy to see, and it was shown at regular intervals to support or compliment the points she was saying. She also uses a small amount of text to highlight the key point she was trying to convey to the audience. Instead of standstill and boring graph, she uses a moving graph or animated graph making it more interesting for us to follow through with the result of the experiment making us more interested to understand the academic content that is being presented.

She state clearly the important thing that the majority of the audience are looking for is the real world application of what she has taught us. She also repeated the important points or an important statement three times making it easier for us to remember.

One point from the Lucas video that I can apply to this speech is the conclusion. She uses a quotation to end her speech such as “ small tweaks leads to big changes” making the speech more memorable.

Professor Amy Cuddy effectively uses spoken reference to support her claims by mentioning the names, institutes, and their findings. She does this every time she brings up new supporting ideas or examples, such as Alex Torodov at Princeton. This gives the audience some sort of reassurance on the credibility of her speech. She personalized her speech by combining her personal anecdote and by using real life experiences as examples. Throughout the speech she uses illustrations and graphs to make it easier for the audience to understand, since she goes through a lot of information. Prof. Amy Cuddy used spoken references very effectively by citing many different sources and providing names of people and institutions when she wants to improve her point or claims as well as to help the audience understand more easily. She did well by providing spoken references that supported the ideas and facts she is giving and did not make it interrupt her speech.
She included many stories in her speech and the majority of them are about her experiences (at work, at school, in life, etc.) and the personalizes her speech and made it seemed to be more about her. However, she made the speech very relatable for the audience by giving relatable situations/ examples, for example, she mentioned job interviews as one of her examples, she made the audience feel empathy and thus feel more relatable to her story when she was talking about the tragedy of car accident and losing her core identity.

When she made spoken references, she began with her main point. Then, she made examples, name the person and the institutions, gave details of the examples, and end up with the results or the conclusions. She personalized her speech by relating her real story of experiencing a car accident to her informative speech. She explained how it affected her IQ leading to the feeling of being in the wrong place and losing confidence, but she could overcome by pretending to be powerful, and that significantly changes her thoughts. What she wanted to deliver was to fake it till you become it. Moreover, she added the illustrations of different poses and related them to the changes in two hormones(cortisol and testosterone) by providing the infographic data. With this, the audience can understand data easily even though they are not specialized in science. In the video, Amy Cuddy, the speaker, mentioned a variety of names of institutions and persons who are experts in particular fields such as Marianne Lafrance as the spoken references. This enhances the information in the speech to be more reliable; the information in the speech mostly comes from the research papers or theories which she also gave specific examples and results of experiments that related to the topic she was talking about. She gave an explanation to explain the experiments she mentioned as supporting. Even though this speech is more informative but it is also the personal one as well, she included her experience in the car accident as an example and relates back to her topic. She used her experience as an example when she felt powerless which makes the audience can follow what is really meant by powerless that Amy Cuddy wanted to mention. In her speech, she gradually introduced her sub-topic in order to build up the evidence for her main idea. This creates validity and makes the audience catches all important points and easy to follow her ideas. In addition, she used questions and phrases such as “do our bodies change our minds?” or “fake it till you make it” to attract the audiences’ attention along with the speaking. Personally, all of these questions and phrases also create the connection of audiences to her points because, at some part of her speaking, the information that was given is overwhelming for a person who does not understand or does not have a lot of knowledge about sciences; because of her questions and phrases, this helps the audiences to understand and can relate to her topic much easier and they also help the audience to come back into the trace where is speaking which they do not need any knowledge; they just need to think accordingly to the questions or phrases based on personal experiences.

It is surprising how she can present a lot of information without confusing her main point to the audience. I agreed that she organized her subtopic very well, starting with general evidence (such as her observation in the classroom) and building on using more specific evidence like statistics from the experiments. Moreover, I did not realize the point that she used questions and phrases that are easy to understand and to remember for the public in order to ensure that all her audience regardless of their educational background understood her message.

In Amy Cuddy’s speech, she effectively uses spoken references to provide credibility towards her presentation. It is clearly seen that she provide citations for her references by mentioning researchers’ names and their whereabouts. She also provide statistical datas to support her speech. There were graphs, images, and clips displayed in order to help audiences visualize what she is trying to say. Most importantly, Amy personalized her speech by including her personal experiences as a part of her speech. She is trying to tell us that she is being truthful to what she is claiming as she quoted, “To not fake it till you make it”. One of my observation is that Amy provides audiences with some space to think about what she is saying. There were questions for audiences to follow and I believe that is what enhances the quality of speech she is presenting. Also, along with various visual aids, gestures, and facial expression she has put into delivering the speech, she allows the audiences to connect and relate to her messages.

I totally agree with this comment that illustrations are important because they help the audiences to visualize accordingly to Amy Cuddy's ideas. Moreover, as this comment mentioned about her car accident experience. She did use her personal experience in this informative speech to make the listeners can relate to the content much easier. All these make her speech to be attractive and approachable.

According to the speech, Amy uses spoken references by naming and crediting many reliable sources; for example, she always mentioned multiple names of scientists and researchers from different institutions and universities followed by the information and the data those experts gave to support her speech and ideas. Amy also personalizes her speech by illustrating many examples and telling her past experiences relating to the topic which makes the speech easier to understand. For example, when she told the story about her car accident and her trauma. Moreover, providing various visual aids like pictures and infographics showing the result of her experiments also allows the audience to easily understand her story and points that she wants to communicate. Lastly, for my observation, her positive personality and body language where she always made some gestures and smiled throughout the whole speech and also was not afraid of making some jokes improve her speech to be more powerful and fascinated so it helps to make a connection between speaker and audience.

During the speech, she uses spoken references by naming those people or the university as sources. The sources she provides give her a strong back up to what she says. She also relates her speech to her personal stories when giving out her points. This makes what she says feels more related and to her and the audience. Also, she provides visual aids by turning the data into pictures which makes the data she gives out more easy to understand and visualize what she is trying to say. I observed her body language and her voice tone. In Amy Cuddy's speech, she credits herself by using references such as institutions, people, etc which provides almost like a "backup" for her presentation to be believable by the audience. There was around 6-7 sources that she provided making her speech very reliable. Not only this, but she uses visual aids for the audience to make it more interesting. She also connects with the audience emotionally as well because she had a tragic past and she uses her personal language to convey those emotions and tell people about her personal experience and how deep it was. On stage, she looks like shes being herself 100 percent of the time which makes her speech also sound more reliable due to her personality. Talking about visual aids, she uses statistics and graphs as well as percentages to show her parts of factual points. She seems very enthusiastic about her topic and her mood and tone was very real throughout her speech. This creates communicative emotions and personal connections with her and the audience making her a very good speaker to listen to. (her body language and tone of voice was my favorite aspects of her speech)

Professor Amy Cuddy implements Spoken References by mentioning the researcher's name, followed by the research institute's name. This method of combining the identities of the references makes it easier for people to grasp where the origins of the content came from.
She adjusted her speech by showing a video clip of the presidents shaking and not shaking hands as an indicator on her visual aids. Even in her studies, she avoided presenting a myriad of pie charts, diagrams, and statistical results. However, she uses images to illustrate the steps of her tests and a few diagrams to demonstrate the results.
During her speech, I found that her facial expression shifted as the sound of the story changed, helping the audience to better appreciate her feelings. That's where I feel I'll be able to adapt it to my own speech.

Moreover, she used many academic content like bar graphs to show statistical information, but she was able to explain it and let the audiences to understand by using a simple language and other illustrations on her speech. Also, the audiences didn't feel bored or lost the attention while she is explaining the academic content. she was able to keep her audiences attention till the end. I think she tried to keep ours's attention by smiling all the time and her hand movements (gestures) was perfectly matching with what she is saying. At the middle of the speech she became emotional when she mentioned about her personal story when she had the accident and the struggles during her college, then her teacher told her (fake it till you make it). And later one when she became a teacher, she advised her student and she realize that you should fake it till you became it. and I guess one of her main messages in the speech that is we should fake it until we make it.

Other than the Spoken References Amy Cuddy used, citing the source of work she took from, she also provided statistics and experiments, which strengthened the credibility of her speech. Furthermore, she told a story of herself when she was 19, a story that personally connected to the topic, and how it has changed her life and her perspective on life. Not only has she presented her personal story, she incorporated simple illustrations on high-power and low-power poses. Illustrations are a very good way for grabbing the attention of audiences, and to also act as an aid for audiences to grasp the meaning of this topic. One more observation I made from this speech making is her powerful entrance to her topic. She started off with an engagement to the audiences, thus having an attention-grabbing effect. Then, she posed a question and gave real life examples in regards to her topic. By doing so, the audience could relate themselves more to the topic she’s presenting.
