Reflective Journal Blog #1: Personal Speaking.

In this first reflective journal blog post, we are reflecting on the speech performances of 2 unique speakers, Prumsodun Ok and Nong Poonsukwatthana. These are two wonderful examples of personal speeches.

What is a Personal speech? Well... it is what it sounds like; it is personal. It starts with you, a personal experience, characteristic, or memory, and it tells a story about it. It aims to connect the audience with you as a human being with real-life experiences. BUT, the thing is, it isn't only about you. If a personal speech is only personal, then the audience loses its reason to listen. The point of your personal story, in order to be a good speech, must have relevance to the listener. I think the two examples we are reviewing this week do just that very effectively.

For this reflection, I would like you to view both speeches. Pay close attention, not only to the content and what they say, but also to who they are and how they present themselves. Don't feel pressure to write about everything you see, but describe 1-2 observations for each speaker, and consider the following questions:

What makes them effective as speakers? Even though they are personal speeches, what makes them relevant to a wider audience?

Your post is due by next class. Remember to include you ID# in your post. I look forward to reading your thoughts. Aj. M

Prumsodun speech was an new and interesting topic. how the person can express his feeling through out dancing. and also he mentioned that this field was only for female. But, he understood it more than them and became a successful person in this field.
Nong tried to show her background and who she struggled to reach where she want to be. the good point that even her English is not as good as the audience (Americans) but she made them to pay their attention to her story.
I think the aim from a personal speech is not only to share the person story. sometimes this speech can be a motivation for the audience or they learn something from it. for example. Nong shared her story since she left Thailand till she opened her own business in U.S. she tried to motivate the people to chase their dreams and anything can be possible.

Prumsodun Ok effectively used his Khmer classical dance passion to engage with his audiences by asking them to participate in his dance hand gestures. He also demonstrated that emotions such as anger, love, and sadness can be expressed through dance. Therefore, his dance demonstration effectively captured his listener’s attention, and that what made his speech unique and interesting.
He made his personal speech relevant to a wider audience by telling them his real-life experiences. He engaged with the audiences by asking them personal questions such as skin color, how many languages people spoke to indicate the level of education, and whether they were wearing glasses. All of these questions allowed the audiences to understand the hardship and suffering life of the speaker and Cambodian people under the Khmer Rouge.
Nong Poonsukwatthana also effectively connected with her audiences by telling her real-life story in a funny way. Even though English is her second language, she still spoke with confidence and that allowed her to be herself on stage.
Her speech is relevant to a wider audience as she used her life story to encourage people to keep on going even when you are in a bad situation, you still should believe in yourself that you can achieve anything. In life, it is hard to aim to be perfect, so the journey is what is worthwhile, not just the destination.

As for Prumsodun Ok, he chose a topic that he is truly interested and passionate about for his speech (a culture of his homeland). By using movements and acting out the Khmer dance as he speaks, his speech becomes more visual and relatable. Furthermore, he also uses a lot of expression in his speech. When talking about the harshness of the Khmer rule, he carries out a melancholy expression. Likewise, when talking about the concept of “beauty”, his expression becomes hopeful. This makes it more touching for the audience. Prumsodun also tries to interact with the audiences: he asks the audiences to act out the moves with him and even try to involve them in his speech. For instance, he asks certain categories of people (those with glass, those who speak a second language, and those with light skin) to stand up, saying that they would all be dead under the Khmer rule. By doing so, the audience can relate more to the story he is telling. Last but not least, after finish telling his personal (and his country’s) story, he emphasizes the message that he wants to share at the end of his speech, making the intention and purpose of his speech clear to the wider audience.

On the other hand, Nong Poonsukwatthana’s strong and unique personality makes her speech seems captivating and interesting from the very beginning. Even though her English is not perfect, Nong spoke with confidence, accepting herself as it is. To engage her audience, Nong tries to add humor and jokes to her speech. This is extremely effective as the audience laughs and interacts with her throughout the speech. Although her speech mainly revolves around her personal story, she makes it relevant to the wider audience by relating her story to life lessons that everyone could relate to. For example, she relates the success of her business to the life lesson of “believing in yourself and do it”. Likewise, throughout her speech, she includes multiple life lessons, including “be true to yourself”, “give to receive”, etc (all of which are relatable to the general audience). Perhaps, the life lesson that I can relate to the most is the nonexistence of ‘perfection’. Nong says that she never actually achieved the perfection that she always yearned for (as the bar would always get higher and higher), but the journey that she’s been through is just incredible.

Nong Poonsukwattana: She told us about her background with the unfortunate life of her dad, so she tried to move away as far as she can. She tried to draw the audience's attention by saying the word you. It is like she also wants the audience to receive her messages. Then, she talks about being a waitress at the restaurant, and this is the only place that she studied English from. After that, she worked as a cook with her friend at Pok Pok. When time passes, she tried to have her own food cart. At that time, she already knew that she was really good at making chicken and rice. Fortunately, she became a leader and had her own team. She also mentioned her mother's phrase which helped her a lot throughout this time. She also gives the audience something which is encouragement (if you believe you can do it, do it!). This will make the audience thinks along with her story and has some new ideas about his or her life.

    Meanwhile,
Prumsodon: He started by talking about the Khmer dance (posture, and hand gesture). At the same time, while he was talking about this story, he also invited the audience to do the same thing as him (in the hand 4 movement (like a cycle of life), and stand up). This movement can be like a language to the dancer because the dancer expresses it through dancing. He also danced and drew the attention of the audience while he danced. The slow and peaceful movement of him could help the audience to go into his story better (imagine the picture in the head). Then, he talked about Cambodia's miserable past. This caused many things to be disappeared also the dancing culture. Fortunately, there was still his teacher who conserved this dance technique, so he has today. He is also a foundation of the gay dance company. After that, before he wanted to end this talk, he gave us a phase, so that the audience can think about it along with his talk.

Prumsodun Ok’s speech is about Khmer dance. He explains basic meaning, background story, and a major historical event about this dance. Even though his topic seems far-off relatable to an everyday viewer, it is quite engaging to watch. I think it is because he makes sure to choose a topic that he is truly passionate about, and he create an activity to keep audience’s attention. By choosing the topic that is genuinely true to him can help on his charisma and sound when he speaks. He doesn’t have to act or fake something, while giving his speech. As much as being true to yourself can enhance on the way you are going to present, it doesn’t change the fact that the topic is not at all appealing to the majority. This is when the physical activity come in. Creating an activity for audience to move and be active can certainly effect on their attention toward Ok’s story. It stimulates the feeling like they are being part of his story when they are performed the hand movement and asked about some common traits like wearing glasses.
Nong Poonsukwatthana’s speech is about her personal journey and how she’d become a food entrepreneur. Her story is quite wild and interesting because she delivers the message like it is a comical anecdote. She develops her character in the story to be independent and adventurous yet quite silly. This support the overall story to be compelling for the audiences since it is similar to a coming of age story. Not to mention, the setting of her journey is a common place for her audience aka the united states, so it is easier for them to feel familiar and engaged with the whole situation. For instances, the time Nong show a picture of her food cart and its price or how she spent her first sums of money on Chanel perfume. This is the kind of environment that is perfect for her to throw out joke about her purchasing it at a higher price.

Prumsodun Ok is a Khmer classical dancer and a founder of Cambodia first gay dance company. He was talking about Khmer classical dance which is a field that he is passionate and specialized. He spoke slow but with rhythm and calm, however, the speech was not boring. His voice was full with emotion which make his speech caught audience’s attention. He encouraged audience to follow his move which make audience have more focus on what he was saying. While he was demonstrating the hand gestures he also explaining what are the moves mean. For example, he gradually raised his point finger vertically and said that it means the growing of tree. This make the audience easily understand the dance and imagine along with him even they are not familiar with the Khmer dance. He maintained strong eye contact with the audience as well as sincerity in his voice. These are the factors that make him effective as a speaker. Moreover, he tried to involve the audience to be part of his speech. For instance, he asked the audience who wear glasses, have light skin tone, and speak in more than one language to stand up. Then he made the audience realized that they have privilege. At the end of the speaking, he summarized his speech with words from other artist, however, the words were meaningful and easily understood for the wider audience.

Nong Poonsukwatthana is an owner of Khao Man Gai food cart and restaurant in Portland. She tried to shared her personal experiences such as her family life and how she becomes an entrepreneur. She made the audience enjoy and laugh with her throughout the show. Although her English was not perfect but she still spoke out loud with confident and added some funny jokes. She also had images on screen to make the audience easily understand what she was talking about. These makes her become such an effective speaker. Furthermore, she tried to involve audience in her speech by using the word “you” when referring to American people. To conclude, she shared her mother’s quote and encourage audience to believe in themselves. She told the audience that she always seeks for perfection and she realized that she will not be able to achieve that. The journey along the way to achieve goal is what really matter, our standard will never stop raising.

Prumsodun Ok was talking about his traditional dance called "Khmer" with a convincing tone on his voice as well as emphasizing the right rhythm(He gave a great pause to regain the audience's attention). He made his speech applicable to a broader audience by applying an intriguing gesture to make the audience virtualize what he was talking about, such as portraying animism by interpreting as a serpent by lowering his feet, curling his toes, and curling his fingers backwards. He continues to encourage audiences to take part in his dance to witness vast feelings such as sorrow, rage and love.

Nong Poonsukwattana, began started her speech with her face filled with enthusiasm. Although English may not be her strength, instead, she replaced it with confidence to talk without fear of making mistakes. While her speech is mostly about her journey to become a food entrepreneur that sounds pretty typical but the thing that made her unique is that she always incorporated relevant stories that could potentially connect with listeners and make them laugh at how similar they are, including the time she was given $300 instead of paying for living, she spent all of them on perfumes and cosmetics which are the thing most people do when having that amount of money.

  8. Thidaporn Ratarsa 6329011 (Section 1)
Prumsodun Ok talks about his culture, which is the Khmer traditional dance. He uses gestures, examples of some dances, the meaning of each gesture, and then asking the audience to participate with him. Throughout his speech, there were a lot of emotions involved. When he was talking about how the Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia, his expression seems sad. However, when he talks about how his teachers were the ones to save the dance tradition or when he talks about beauty, he was hopeful. This captured the audience’s attention. He also talks about his real-life experiences and how he is a child of refugees. By talking about real-life experiences, it allows the audience to be able to connect with the speaker more and also grabs their attention.

As for Nong Poonsukwatthana’s speech, her personality and her energy right from the start is very different from Prumsodun. Her strong personality allows her to catch the audience’s attention and it feels like we just cannot take our eyes off her. She spoke with confidence despite the fact that her English is not as good as other people around her. She mainly talks about where she came from and how she got successful, but to make it interesting, she puts out a few jokes to engage with the audience. The audience would laugh, which is a great way to grab their attention. She also shared pictures of her journey to allow the audience to get a deeper understanding of what her life was like. She ended the speech with her mother's quote and told the audience to always believe in themselves and to just do it.

Prumsodun OK used clear gestures which were also consistent with what he was talking about. He also demonstrated the dance with his whole body, showing to the audience that he knew insightfully on this area. His variety tones of voice also significantly create that atmosphere which evokes certain emotions in his audiences. With natural and appropriate pause, pace and silence, he could grab their attentions and interests. Moreover, he also interacted with the audience in many ways, such as asking them to stand. When he used imagery, the audience were able to imagine and follow along with his speech. Lastly, what he pointed out were the beauty of his art and culture as well as the historical story which would be experienced by everyone regardless of their nationalities.

Firstly, it is clearly seen that Nong Poonsukwattana made eye contact to every part of the hall. She also used natural gestures and facial expressions which helped engage with her audiences. More importantly, she could still return and maintain her speech even after talking about sentimental topics. This is done by speaking loudly and smiling, suggesting her sincerity to her audience. In addition, this also allowed people to feel free to laugh at her, showing that they were paying attention and responding back. Eventually, she stressed a strong take home message about life. With the same feelings that occur in everyday life, whether hopelessness or loneliness, the audiences could feel involved with her speech.

Prumsodun Ok first told us the story of the Khmer dance without telling us the connection to his story. He told us the tragic events in history that destroyed all important culture and traditions that have been passed on for generations in Cambodia, and how his teacher’s teacher step by step revived the arts. I think that the audience was very engaged with his speech because he targeted the audience's emotions and state facts that might have the audience relate back to the speech and the Khmer Rouge such as how people are light skinned, have access to exceptional healthcare and are educated, while back in Cambodia the people suffered from inequality. This made the audience feel as if they are included in his speech. Furthermore, I noticed how he used the combination of the tempo of the speech and his action (dance) made the speech made it very engaging and relaxing, as if I am watching an artistic performance. Near the end of the speech, he came back to show what he first introduced to the audience (Khmer dance) is related to him, which made all of his speech and what he said earlier about his culture and history shaped him into a proud Khmer dancer who is the first to open up his own gay dancing group.

Nong Poonsukwattana is a chicken rice seller in Portland. Her story is very inspiring, she first told us the story of how she had an abusive father that abused her family physically and mentally and how she moved to the United States with only 30 dollars. I noticed that accents don't really matter as much but how you deliver the speech, she emphasized on the volume of her voice and body movements, making it seem motivational and ambitious. She told us about her hardships and how she persevered through and overcame them, making her become a successful entrepreneur in her field, thus gaining respect from the people around. The contagious smile and light hearted script she wrote made us all engage in her story.

  12. Pribdao Charumattanont 6329017 (section 1)

According to the speech given by Prumsodun Ok, the topic that was presented is a topic that was close to home and close to heart for him making it easy for the audience to connect with how he feels given that it is a realistic scenario. He didn’t give it off right away why he was telling the story but gave a background on it, but just deep critical explanations about what their culture was all about. The khmer dance was a key topic in his presentation and he told the story on how this fine art that has been around for so long was destroyed and how his teacher’s teachings slowly revived one by one. Even though this topic is widely common among people, he connects with the audience’s emotions by making the audience to act out the dance moves with him causing them to relate with his culture more than just giving them explanations about his culture. After the audience emotionally and physically connects with him, he brings out the inequality that people would experience under the Khymer rule. He asks audiences that spoke and second language, those with light skin to stand up and told them the consequences that would happen to them if they were ruled under Khmer. By making the audience connect with him they can feel his pain and the emotions he is portraying. Not only this, but when he asks people to act out or even just giving the speech in general, he speaks with a certain tempo, with a certain wave in his voice, knowing when to dim his voice or adding more emotions and beat to his words. I feel like by him talking with beat and rhythm, I can hear his meaning more than the actual background of his history and how it emotionally connects the audience with his life.

The second speaker that I watched is Nong Poonsukwattana. Her background being that she is a chicken rice seller in Portland and how she moved to the United States with only having 30 dollars in hand. She didn’t have the best accent that was clear to understand, but her tone, rhythm, and beat portrayed her emotions and I feel for her when she told the story of her abusive father. Her voice and charismatic character makes her unique and makes the audience feel like they want to hear more about what she has to say. Even though she is literally reciting her biography to the audience, it provokes a lot of emotions and attention to them since the speech is revolved around humour, jokes and the attractiveness of the tone in her voice. I can see clearly how these traits are extremely useful when presenting information to a wide variety of the audience whereas they can relate to a few points of her life. Not only does she tell her story, she also throws out lessons for the audience and acts if she was a motivational speaker herself. She shows interest around people “being theirselves”, “achieving your goals”, “be true to yourself”, etc. Even listening to her, I already feel motivated to not procrastinate and set the bar higher and higher for each of my goals.

It appears that Prumsodun’s speech was about the history of Khmer dance. He’s able to give an example of the emotions when he’s on stage, such as anger and sadness in Robam kbach boran. In the same way, his voice also sound melodious that he speaks with stress and intonation, along with the rhythm between sentences. I believe that’s what makes the speech becomes more interesting and capturing. Prumsodun also tried to show people some of the gestures and let the audience participated by doing 4 hand gestures (a cycle of life) and asking them to stand up to the questions which seems to be relevant to them, due to the fact that he wanted people to understand and feel what it’s like to have unnoticed privileges which his forerunners had to fight for in the past. Lastly, he also summarize and end the speech with a motivated quote in relation to a courage which’s quite memorable.

On the other hand, Nong Poonsukwatthana shares us her story life, showing how strong her attitudes and personality are. It’s all about the realness of the speech which makes people feel relatable to the story she tries to get the audience into. Also, she gives the sense of humor and frankness through the way she speaks, it supports the quality of her show to the way she wanted it to be.
Nong refers to her past life as a lesson to everyone, everything seem to be harsh for her at the beginning yet she made it through. She speaks to encourage people who’s probably lost and suffering that sometimes life could be tough, but you will surely make it. Her life used to be unfortunate, but she improved herself and learned from experiences to become who she is right now.

For the first video, the speaker's name is Prumsodun. He started by describing and showing his dance which makes the story more interesting. He also asked the audience to follow his actions to get the participation; it attracts the audience's attention.

Nong Poonsukwattana spoke about how she started her business and went through the difficulties in her life to achieve her goal. She caught the audience’s attention by putting some jokes along with the story that she told and showing the picture of people and things she met. This helps the audience to easily understand her story. Another notion that makes her speech attractive is her facial expression. She expressed happiness with a smiley face and showed her sadness through her face and shaky sound.

The similarity that I found between the 2 videos are the speakers have interaction with the audiences, have good pauses as well as rhythms and intonation, and the variety used of words.
Because of these, audiences can imagine the stories that were told so they gain the experience like the speakers themselves. This makes the speech become powerful and relate to everyone in the hall.

What makes them effective as speakers?

    Video 1 :

One of the ways that made him effective as a speaker is the great usage of his pauses in between words and sentences. This makes us as the listener feel drawn to his talk and anticipate what the speaker is going to say next. Another quality that an effective speaker should possess is the ability to paint a clear picture through storytelling in which he did this by using his body movements to describe how the snake movements in the ancient dance were similar or symbolizes to the flow of water. By using his body language and doing those movements, he connects with his audiences making it an effective way of delivering message to the audiences. He also used the repetition of the word “one” to make the message stronger and easier for the audience to remember. For one to be an effective speaker, they should make eye contact with their audience around the room. The speaker in the video made lots of eye contact with the audiences around the room and also engages the audience in his talk. He engages the audience by asking them to participate and stand up if they possess these qualities. This makes his talk more interactive and makes him an effective speaker. He then ended with a quote to make the speech special.

    Video 2:

At the beginning, she greets the audience and looks very confident. Her delivery makes her an effective speaker because she slowly and calmly guide us through her talk about her life. She also employ a great usage of the technique of stress and intonation throughout her talk about her life making it more interesting and easier for the audience to follow along with her talk. We can see that she has shown a great example of using pauses whilst she is speaking to give herself time to think about what she is going to say next. It makes her speech flow smoothly and making her an effective speaker. What makes a speaker effective is their passion about the topic they are talking about and she shown her passion by using her facial expressions. Throughout, the speaker also uses a tone of voice that was natural and make her speech doesn’t seem to be too rehearsed making her effective as a speaker. An effective speaker think about the ending of their speech by giving something for the audiences to connect to. In Nong’s talk, she ended with an inspiring quote for the audiences to remember.

Even though, they are personal speeches, What makes them relevant to the wider audience?

For a speaker to make their topic of their talk relevant to the wider audience, they must be able to show a link between the topic they are presenting and the audience. In the first video, we can see that he has shown the audience a clear link of the topic itself to its audience when he asked the audience to stand up if they have these qualities and explain what having those qualities meant. The speaker in the first video have chosen a topic of dance and as we know that dance is a universal language that is used by the performers to deliver a message or tell a story. The topic of dance widen the scope of audience globally. The second talk was a bit different in terms of how she presented the link to the first video. The last half part of her talk was about food which everyone can relate to. She also talks about her being an entrepreneur and building from when she had nothing coming into the USA to running a successful business in the USA. By talking about the hardship she faced as an entrepreneur, it opens her talk to entrepreneurs out there and inspire them to do the same.

What made Prumsadon Ok's speech effective was the way he used his gestures when he was speaking. Prumsadon's topic was about Khmer dance, so he started off by showing each gestures and explaining their meanings. He ask the audience to perform it with him creating the first connection. He then progressed to telling the story about Khmer Rouge and how rough those times were. To relate this with the audience, Promsadon categorized his audience into groups by their characteristics and asked them to stand up accordingly. He then explained how each of them would be viewed as and treated like if they were living back the in the days. This creates an even deeper connection between him and his audience. Together with this expression, tone, and pace, Promsadun Ok's speech was captivating and charming.

Nong Poonsukwattana's speech, on the other hand, was humorous and filled with jokes along the way. Even though her life story was sad, her distinctive personally lifted up the mood. Her humor kept her audience active and laughing, whilst keeping their attention on her. She then gives off her message through a relatable medium that the audience would be able to relate to--creating a connection between her and the audience.

Prumsodun Ok began his speech by sharing the history of the Khmer classical dance. His topic is one where he is passionate about, and used various methods to portray this culture. While speaking, he also incorporated body movements along as well, making the speech seem like it was flowing in a smooth stroke. His tone and expressions throughout the speech was very calming, another trait suitable for his topic. He also interacted with the audience, teaching them the 4 primary hand gestures of the dance (like bringing them along this cultural journey). Furthermore, Prumsodun also discusses how people back in Cambodia are experiencing inequality from the Khmer rouge. This probably has an emotional impact on the audience (real life experiences are often very relatable), since the speaker pointed out the challenges Cambodian faced that are now commonly accessed (not having privilege of gaining education, not having access to healthcare, having to work under the sun). He also related the art form to diversity, courage, love, and existence (things which are seen in daily life of individuals).

Nong Poonsukwattana is a food entrepreneur, starting her journey in the United States with only 30 dollars in hand. She shared her tragic past, and what she has learned on the way to chasing her profession. By occasionally including in some funny jokes/ encounters about her past, her personality and a smile on her face really captured the attention of the audiences. Although not fluent in English, she is not afraid to make mistakes in her speech and always carry it with confidence. Her story acts as an inspiration to many: by always working hard and never stop chasing. No matter how bad of a situation you are in, always believe in yourself that you can make it work. When opportunity arises, be sure to seize it, and make the most out of it.

Prumsodun Ok is a Khmer dancer. He chose his traditional dance which is what he is truly interested in and passionate about as a topic. He began his speech with the introduction of a Khmer dance, demonstrated the basics of his dance, and explained the meaning of his gestures and postures which could be easily understood. His calm voice, movement, and eye contact could significantly catch the audience’s attention. These are the factors that make him become such an effective speaker. Also, he interacted with audiences by encouraging them to engage in his speech in various ways such as asking some of those wearing glasses, having light skin tone, and speaking in more than one language to stand up. By doing this, it makes his speech relevant to a wider audience.

Nong Poonsukwattana is an owner of the chicken ricer restaurant in Portland. Her speech is about her real-life experiences. She first talked about her abusive father, and how she moved to the United States with having only 30 dollars. Although her English is not that good, she was very confident while she was speaking which was very captivating and motivating. Her tone of voice and facial expression revealed her emotions which made audiences wanted to pay more attention to her speech and made her speech effective. In addition, she added humor and a few jokes in the speech. Some pictures are also included for the audience to easily understand and feel more related to the speech. Lastly, she ended the show with her mother’s quote and gave the audience encouragement.

Prumsodun Ok begins his personal speech with the explanation of Khmer dance to grab the attention of the audience. Moreover, he dances while he delivers the speech to not let the audience lose focus on him. He also asks the audience to participate in his dance hand gestures and he doesn't speak too fast.

He makes his personal speech relevant to the wider audience by starting from board topics such as khmer dance then trying to connect that topic to khmer history then narrow it to who is he or what is his job. By starting with a board topic makes the audience effortlessly maintain the attention to the speech. He asks those with glasses, those who speak more than 2 languages, and those with light skin to stand up and explain the reason why he asks them to stand up, that is to explain the background of certain categories of people. At the end of speech, he shares his thoughts to the audience to help the audience understand the message that he was trying to deliver.

Nong Poonsukwatthana’s funny and confident personality helped her connect with the audience. Even though her english is not perfect, she speaks with confidence.

Even though she spoke mainly about herself but she made it relevant to the wider audience by sharing her experience and teaching life lessons. As she told her audience that she is the one of successful entrepreneurs from the beginning and told us that her start line is really bad. As we already know that at the end she will be successful but how she makes it here is really interesting and makes her personal speech attractive. She utilizes many quotes to teach and encourage the audience and make them into her story. When you confront any hardship, you have to believe in yourself then you can overcome it. She aims to be perfect but in life the expectation will grow higher and higher so it is hard to be perfect, but the journey along the way is incredible.

The first video I watch is Nong’s personal speech. She started her speech by introducing herself and her food truck business. She is selling one thing and it is called “Kao Mun Kai” or chicken with rice, a Thai local dish that can be found anywhere around the country. Then she began to share her childhood story in Thailand. It was not a great time when she was a kid. Her father was an alcoholic unemployed man. She always wanted to leave her home and It has been her dream since then. With the support from her sister, she was able to travel to Unite States where her life really began. The speech may sound emotional, but the speaker was being humorous by including jokes in the story. I think this is what makes Nong a effective speaker since all the attention remained at her speech. She approached to the audience’s sense of humor to keep their focuses on the story she is telling. She then shared the problems she faced in her new chapter of life and how she struggled through it. We can now see this part of her speech can relate to everyone else’s life. Her story inspires the audience to believe in their potentials and never give up. And among all the advices she gave, the most important one is do not be afraid to take action.
For Prumsodun Ok’s speech, he first briefly told the history of how Khmer dance originated. He described the magnificence of the Khmer dance as an iconic tradition of Cambodia. Every gesture came from mimicking the movement of living creatures in the nature. For instance, he began his speech with a gesture that imitate the serpent. He described the serpent’s movement as a flow of water where the process of living started. Moreover, he portrayed how Khmer dance convey the meaning to the audience. Each gesture has its own meaning such as gesture for anger, gesture for sorrow and even the word “I” also has a gesture for it. He appreciated the ancestors that contributed in the Khmer dance and all the Khmer dance teachers, including his teacher. Despite the tragic history behind the Khmer dancers, the Khmer dance is now recovering and he also play his role in preserving the Khmer dance. As an effective speaker, Prumsodun kept the audience engaged by asking them perform a basic Khmer dance. He reached to the audience’s emotions by telling how human cruel actions, like wars, almost destroy his beloved Khmer dance. For the wider audience, he has shown his positive ambition towards his precious thing, in the case the preservation of the Khmer dance. Similar to all audience, carry on doing what you like and possibly keep it with you and your next generations as well.

Some devastating details about the past of Khmer dance and its artists were later revealed to create an emotional impact on the listeners.
